A RECORD prize fund for the John Smith's Cup meeting of over £365,000 will be up for grabs tomorrow at York racecourse.

All eyes today, however, are on the Group Three Unibet Summer Stakes where Queen Kindly - a daughter of Frankel - is likely to start as favourite.

Trained in North Yorkshire by Richard Fahey, the highly-rated filly won the Group 2 Lowther Stakes on the Knavesmire just over 12 months ago and will be looking for her first success as a three year old under jockey Paul Hanagan.

Fahey, leading trainer at York last season, currently stands third in the Flat Trainer's Championship behind only Aidan O'Brien and John Gosden.

The £200,000 prize money in the John Smith’s Cup makes it the richest middle distance handicap in Britain.

Named after Britain’s best-selling ale, it forms the centrepiece of a 14 race programme over the next two days that includes two Listed races.

The John Smith's Cup has the longest continuous commercial sponsorship of a flat race in the country, an arrangement that will reach its Diamond Jubilee following the announcement of a contract extension with Heineken.

One of Europe’s most prestigious and competitive middle-distance heritage handicap contests, it is contested over the extended one mile and a quarter.

Master Carpenter and Phillip Makin will put an unbeaten York record on the line tomorrow when they bid to win the race for the second time in three years.

"He's back to a mile and a quarter and it's nice they've had a bit of rain at York. On his day he's a very good horse and I'm hoping for a good run," said trainer Rod Millman.

Today's racing starts at 2.05pm.
