TOM Scudamore won the first ever 'Jump Jockeys' Nunthorpe' and smashed the theory that you can never 'make all' at York.

Scudamore, who is best known for his heroics on Thistlecrack over fences, romped home on Tylery Wonder in a challenge that provided a vastly different test of his racing credentials.

Bursting out of the stalls, he led for the majority of the five furlong sprint and finished a full four lengths clear of the field on the seven year old which is trained by Paul Midgley at Westow.

Only the night before, Scudamore had been warned about the perils of leading too early by his former jockey pal Aaron Bateman at David O'Meara's yard in Upper Helmsley.

"I stayed with them on Friday night and Aaron told me that you can't make all around York! Well, thankfully, I have been able to prove them wrong," he laughed.

"It was a great experience and, hopefully, they will put it on again next year. It was nice to be involved in something different and I would really love to do it again."

While Saturday's meeting may not have been for the purists, the Knavesmire had been packed to the rafters ahead of a live performance by Olly Murs.

It was the second time in seven years that the former 'X Factor' runner-up had headlined at York's track and the 38,500 turn-out undoubtedly justified the decision to put the event on the calendar.

Odds-on favourite Moseeb, ridden by Martin Lane, won the opening race for Godolphin. The two-year-old held off a late challenge from Dontgiveuponbob to get home by half a length and looked an interesting newcomer.

"He showed his greenness early on but when it mattered he knuckled down and did it quite well," said Lane. "He is definitely a character and he will come on for that run."

Favourite backers were in the money again when Sainted won the second race, the Bet & Watch At Sunbets.co.uk Fillies Stakes, at odds of 11-10.

Trained by William Haggas and ridden by Harry Bentley, the four-year-old had been absent since winning at Newmarket just over a year earlier but won impressively ahead of Tim Easterby's Alpine Dream.

Bentley completed a rapid double when following-up on Defoe in the theSunbets.co.uk Stakes, the richest race of the afternoon.

Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Defoe now looks destined for Listed/Group company and held off a strong late challenge from James Sullivan on board the Richard Fahey trained Society Red. The victory, which was worth just over £31,000, also completed a hat-trick of wins for favourite backers.

Jockey Rachel Richardson justified the faith of trainer Tim Easterby when riding Just Hiss to victory in The Like Sun Bets on Facebook Stakes handicap over a mile.

Malton-based Easterby had given Richardson the licence to ride the horse in whatever way she saw fit after taking the reins for three of his last five appearances.

She had won previously with the bay gelding at Musselburgh in September but had finished eighth in a handicap over a mile and two furlongs at York a fortnight ago.

"He had a good race at the last meeting here," said Easterby. "But I said to Rachel, 'ride him how you want to ride him!' She's ridden him before, she has won on him before, so I will just leave it to you.

"He's a lovely horse who likes a bit of juice in the ground. I thought we had a good chance today. The softer, the better, and it had just dried out enough."

Filey-born Richardson said: "I was always going to ride him a little more positive. We had dropped back to a mile but we thought the ground would be soft and it wasn't. But he committed well and even though I dropped my stick a furlong out, it worked out in our favour."

Godolphin had entered only two horses at the meeting and the second, Finishing Touch, also made it to the winner's enclosure on debut under jockey Lane.

The three-year-old moved ahead of Caridade with a furlong and a half to go in the Sunbets.co.uuk Youbetcha British EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes and held off a late push from Stevie Donohoe and Spinnaka to win by three quarters of a length.

Shelley Birkett rode Jacbequick, trained by David O'Meara, to victory in the thrilling final race, the Lady Riders Stakes over a mile and three furlongs.

Birkett fought a intense duel with rival Amanda Daniel and Azari through the final furlong and a half before getting home by a neck.

"I had a winner at York in October in the Coral Sprint Trophy but it's nice to get another one on the board," she said. "I moved up to Mr O'Meara's from Newmarket about two and a half years ago. I love it up north and long may these winners continue."
