MALTON trainer Nigel Tinkler won the final race at the 250th Doncaster Cup meeting with Normandy Barriere.
The 11/4 joint favourite, ridden by Andrea Atzeni and sponsored by Alexanders York, beat 16/1 shot Miracle of Medinah to take the £10,128 top prize in the Class Two Coopers Marquess Handicap Stakes.
Earlier, Sheikhzayedroad had won the showcase Class One Group Two race at 10/3 as Clever Cookie, trained in Malton by Peter Niven, trailed in a disappointing seventh of eight runners with a starting price of 8/1.
Brian Ellison’s Seamour, also running at 8/1, was edged into second place by joint-favourite Wall of Fire, despite leading The Ladbrokes Mallard Stakes Class Two Handicap approaching the final furlong.
A disappointing day for Middleham’s Mark Johnston, meanwhile, saw third-placed The Last Lion hand him his best finish of the afternoon at 11/2 in the Group Two Pepsi Max Flying Childers Stakes.
There are no North Yorkshire runners in tomorrow’s St Leger at Town Moor with Idaho the overnight favourite.
