JOCKEY Dougie Costello is ‘predicting a riot’ from Woody Bay as York racecourse hosts the Kaiser Chiefs.

The Leeds indie rockers perform on the Knavesmire immediately after tonight’s six race card.

It will be their second appearance at the famous old track after playing there to a near 30,000 crowd three years ago.

Costello, based in Malton, has three rides and says Woody Bay has a good chance of topping the charts in the Novus Stakes at 8pm.

Trained by Mark Walford at Sheriff Hutton, Costello rode the same horse to victory over a mile and a furlong at York last month.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on board Woody Bay,” he said. “He was very brave when he won for me at York in June, getting back past a horse to win by a short head, and he really likes the Knavesmire so I would hope he will run a big race.

“He’s been very consistent lately and I am good friends with his trainer who has been in great form.”

Tonight’s meeting is part of York’s two day ‘Music Showcase weekend’ and part of the ‘Go Racing in Yorkshire’ Summer Festival.

Tomorrow, there is a seven race card followed by a performance from Irish band The Corrs.

The leading jockey at this week’s festival wins a trophy but Costello has yet to have a winner and the leading contender is Paul Mulrennan.

“I was down at Yarmouth yesterday which is pretty far from Yorkshire. I have got a couple of good rides at Thirsk and York on Friday but I still think I will struggle to win the trophy!”

He will also miss Saturday’s meeting at York because he is riding at Ascot.

Costello, who also rides recent winner Art Obsession for Paul Midgeley and Used To Be for Karl Burke tonight, said: “I always enjoyed going to the great northern jump tracks like Wetherby where the support was amazing. It’s the same on the Flat tracks.

“The stands always look packed and the Yorkshire crowds seem to like to come for the racing as a sport – and not just the betting. With the Kaiser Chiefs playing, I have no doubt the stands will be full.”

Reflecting on his year so far, Costello added: “I’ve been pleased with how my season has gone.

“At the start of this year, my aim was to make sure my new partnership with trainer Karl Burke went well.

“Quiet Reflection has to be the highlight for us when she won at Royal Ascot.

“She’s done me, the team at Karl’s, and the whole of the north of England proud by winning Group 1, 2 and 3 races this season and I’m grateful to be associated with her.

“The only problem now is once you’ve had a taste of Group 1 glory you just want more, but it’s a nice problem to have.”

Although tickets are still available in all areas today, the County Stand on Saturday is now a sell out.

The £50,000 Sky Bet Dash will be the highlight of Saturday’s card and is sure to be a stunning spectacle as sixteen speedsters cover six furlongs on the Knavesmire.

Tanzeel won the race a year ago and is back again for more. Opposition is provided by a clutch of in-from horses including the David O’Meara-trained Intisab who has won two of his last three starts.
