MALTON trainer Richard Fahey's horse Ribchester took the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot - which was bad news for the Queen.

The Royal family had turned out in numbers yesterday to watch Light Music, the Queen's first runner of the week, in the first race of the afternoon.

However, it was the Godolphin-owned Ribchester, third in April's 2000 Guineas, who stole the show with Light Music well down the field.

"I'm absolutely over the moon," said Fahey afterwards. "I went to Ascot quietly confident - then you take a look at the opposition and see them in the paddock and the butterflies begin to set in!"

Jockey William Buick always looked confident on Ribchester who took over inside the final two furlongs and ran on strongly to beat the fast-finishing Thikriyaat by two and a quarter lengths.

"Watching the race it never looked in doubt," said Fahey. "William agreed and said he always felt it was only a question of when he 'pressed the button'."

Ribchester will now renew rivalries with Galileo Gold, the winner of the 2,000 Guineas, in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 27.

Fahey runs Suegioo today in the Gold Cup In Honour Of The Queen's 90th Birthday and Garcia in the Britannia Stakes.

"He needs a lifetime best to be competitive in this company but (Suegioo) will handle conditions as well as anything which offers us hope of hitting the frame."

On Garcia, he said: "He needs to step up again but does have a chance as trip, ground and track should all be right for him."
