JAN VAN HOOF, who failed by only a whisker at Pontefract last week, heads to Nottingham today in a bid for quick compensation.

The mount of Jack Garritty, who is in second place behind Tom Marquand in the race for the apprentice championship, Richard Fahey's dual-winning sprinter has been in good form lately, finishing third in a hot handicap at the Curragh before being beaten a nose by Jonny Cavagin at Pontefract.

If none the worse for that effort, Jan Van Hoof can go one better in the £25,000 Jockey Club Grassroots Sprint Series Championship Handicap.

Fahey also has good prospects of winning the Jockey Club Grassroots Middle Distance Series Championship Handicap – also worth £25,000 – with QUEST OF COLOUR, the mount of Paddy Mathers.

The four-year-old has finished fourth at Carlisle on her last two outings and was beaten only a length on her penultimate start. He could go well here from the foot of the weights.

TRIATHLON should go well in the second leg of the British Stallion Studs Oh So Sharp Fillies' Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute's juvenile showed promise on her debut at Newmarket in the summer. She has not been seen for ten weeks but, provided she is fit enough to do herself justice, she is fancied to step up on her initial outing.

David Elsworth has done a great job with LA SUPERBA, placing her to win at Beverley, Windsor and Sandown on her last three starts.

The three-year-old aims to add to her tally in the ROA/Racing Post Owners Jackpot Handicap with Tom Marquand in the saddle.

Life is becoming tougher for La Superba as she continues to climb the weights but she is in such fine form it would be no surprise to see her in the mix once again.

At Salisbury, ELRONAQ promises to be hard to beat under Paul Hanagan in the Bathwick Tyres Conditions Stakes.

A talented juvenile, if not quite top-notch, Elronaq finished third to the brilliant Shalaa in the July Stakes at Newmarket and filled fourth spot at Doncaster last time. He should have too much firepower for his rivals here.

RIVER ECHO makes appeal in the second division of the Wilkins Kennedy Maiden Stakes.

Mick Channon's colt shaped well to finish second at Newbury on his racecourse bow earlier in the month. He should be a bit more streetwise this time in the hands of Silvestre de Sousa and carries the nap vote.

In the first division, a note should be made of MOOTAHARER, a well-bred son of Dubawi, who makes his debut for Charlie Hills and who will be ridden by Hanagan.

RAW IMPULSE is nothing if not consistent and may be the one to be on in the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap.

A winner at Nottingham in May, Clive Cox's colt has since finished second at Newmarket and third to Imshivalla at Goodwood. This looks a good opportunity for him to return to winning ways. Oisin Murphy has the mount.

Also worthy of consideration are WHITCHURCH (3.25), wearing a visor for the first time, and IVANHOE (5.35), who chased home a bang in-form rival at Pontefract a fortnight ago.
