JACK Garritty, who left York racecourse last month nursing a broken collar bone after a fall in front of the grandstands, can enjoy a happier Knavesmire experience this afternoon.

The crack 3lb claimer rides Mhedi for his Malton boss Richard Fahey in the Geoff Pemberton Handicap and is napped to score on the gelding, who carries the well-known colours of Dr Marwan Koukash.

Garritty has ridden a handful of winners since his accident, which happened when he was unseated on his way to the start of a race. The injury healed well and he was back in action only a fortnight later.

As for Mhedi, he has been running well. The six-year-old finished third to Algar Lad here at the Dante Festival and has since been beaten only four lengths into fifth place at Newmarket.

Both those races were over six furlongs and the step up to seven furlongs this afternoon, plus Garritty's riding allowance, should combine to provide Mhedi with a winning chance.

Fahey has other good chances throughout the programme, not least with PIPPIN STREET in the £12,000 SKF Rous Selling Stakes.

Tony Hamilton's mount finished second from a bad draw at Ripon on her debut and has since finished fourth at Redcar. The step up to six furlongs will be in her favour.

The 888sport Choose EBF Nominated Fillies' Handicap boasts a prize fund of £25,000 and is the richest race on the card.

It might well be that lightning strikes in the same place twice in this six furlongs event. WILLBEME took the honours 12 months ago and is fancied to do so again, despite being on a 17lb higher mark this time around.

Trained by Neville Bycroft, Willbeme has developed into a smart sprinter. She finished fifth to Out Do in a hot handicap on her reappearance here last month and has since finished a close-up third to Monsieur Joe in another hot Knavesmire handicap just under a fortnight ago. Monsieur Joe has since franked that form by finishing an excellent second in the Investec Dash at Epsom on Derby day.

Willbeme now takes on her own gender and, although she has top weight to carry, she looks sure to make a bold bid. Phillip Makin has the mount.

John Quinn can hit the York target with TRENDSETTER in the Garbutt & Elliott Handicap over one and three-quarter miles.

The gelding came good at Chester last time and off a 5lb higher mark can keep pace with the handicapper by obliging again and providing Makin with another winner on the card.

Quinn also has good prospects with the tough and consistent FINAL COUNTDOWN in the DRS Television CCTV Design & Installations Handicap.

But Tim Easterby may hold the key to this race with his two runners, Silvery Moon and MAVEN. Both have solid chances and marginal preference is for Maven, who is in-foal (a condition which often brings about improved performances on the racecourse), and who was a winner last time out at Beverley. She will be reunited with Rachel Richardson, who has developed a good rapport with her.

Mark Johnston, who had four winners on the final day at the Dante Festival, has every chance of adding to his Knavesmire 2015 tally courtesy of SECRET AMBITION in the opening ripleycollection.com Longines Irish Champions Weekend Maiden Stakes.

The colt has shown a decent level of ability in his two outings, particularly on his latest start at Doncaster where he finished a close-up second to Birchwood, who went on to follow-up in a valuable race at Newbury. Silvestre de Sousa has the mount.

INTERCONNECTION, a recent winner at Sandown, can follow-up in the 888sport Apprentice Handicap in the hands of Ryan Clark. Gleese The Devil and Stanarley Pic may give Ed Vaughan's four-year-old most to think about in the finale.
