CUT THE CORNER, who just failed to hold off the flying finish of Chalk It Down at Wetherby last week, returns to the same course this evening seeking quick compensation.

Trained by Dr Richard Newland, who will forever be remembered as the man who sent out last year’s Grand National winner Pineau Du Re, Cut The Corner was a winner at Warwick on his penultimate start.

He looked likely to follow up here last week only to hang to his left on the run-in and forfeit the lead to Cut The Corner, who, having looked to be going nowhere turning for home, sprouted wings in the closing stages.

Christopher Ward, who claims a valuable 5lb, again has the ride on Cut The Corner, who promises to take all the beating.

Richard Johnson, who was among the winners on this course last week, can land the opening wetherbyracing.co.uk Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle on nap selection Promanco.

Charlie Longsdon’s six-year-old won by seven lengths at Ludlow earlier this month and is fancied to follow up.

A win for Promanco will augur well for the chances of Ballykan in the Life & Style Novices’ Hurdle.

The six-year-old chased home Promanco at Ludlow and has every chance of going one better in this event. In the saddle will be Sam Twiston-Davies riding for his father, Nigel.

Trillerin Minella (7.20), who looks to be returning to form and recent winner Haydock today and Drom (8.25) are two others to note.

At Haydock, the colours of Her Majesty the Queen are set to be carried with distinction by Ring Of Truth in the British Stallion Studs Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

Trained by Richard Hannon, the two-year-old was beaten a whisker on her debut at Newbury six weeks ago.

Now up to six furlongs, she can have the edge over the similarly promising Hyland Heather, trained by Richard Fahey, and a creditable second on her debut at Ripon.

Fahey has similarly good prospects in the first division of this race with Awohaam.

Although only seventh on her first outing at Newmarket last month, Awohaam was sent off favourite that day. She steps up to six furlongs this afternoon and a better show can be anticipated.

David O’Meara can land the Racing UK Anywhere Handicap with Signore Piccolo.

The sprinter has been running well lately and went down narrowly at Pontefract last weekend. This distance of six furlongs suits him well and Josh Doyle, who is good value for his 7lb apprentice allowance, knows him well.

John Quinn has Hubertas in tremendous form and it would be no surprise if the Norton gelding were to land a hat-trick of wins in the Book Your Christmas Party At Haydock Park Handicap.

The gelding has won his last two starts in gritty style and although he has never won by very far, he continues to pull out enough when required. There could be more to come from him.

Also worth noting on the Haydock programme - the first of three days at the Lancashire course - are the promising Eltezam (3.20), who shaped well in a hot race at Newbury first time out, and recent course winner Merchant Of Medici (4.50), who represents in-form North Yorkshire trainer Micky Hammond.

Haydock today: 1.50 Count Montecristo, 2.20 Awohaam, 2.50 Ring Of Truth, 3.20 Eltezam, 3.50 Signore Piccolo, 4.20 Hubertas, 4.50 Merchant Of Medici.

Wetherby today: 5.40 Promanco (NAP), 6.10 Rathlin Rose, 6.45 Ballykan, 7.20 Trillerin Minella, 7.55 Cut The Corner, 8.25 Drom, 8.55 Miss Macnamara.

Today’s other meetings: Lingfield, Sandown and Worcester.
