PAUL HANAGAN, who, having struck it rich in the Godolphin Mile at Dubai World Cup night in Meydan on Sunday was back in action at Doncaster the next day, where the former Malton-based champion jockey rode two winners.

Hanagan heads to Chelmsford today and is fancied to take first blood on nap selection Nawaasy in the Bet toteplacepot Maiden Stakes over a mile and a quarter.

The step up in trip should suit the three-year-old, who shaped with unmistakable promise on her one and only juvenile outing at Wolverhampton last October, finishing third after running green and doing all her best work in the closing stages.

Trained by Charlie Hills, Nawaasy has been found a good opportunity for her reappearance on behalf of Hanagan, who looks poised to enjoy another tremendous year riding as retained jockey to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum for whom he won last year’s Oaks on Taghrooda and the Coral-Eclipse on Mukhadram.

The owner has a talented bunch of three-year-olds in action this term, including Faydhan, impressive winner of his only race as a juvenile and currently second-favourite for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

He is due to begin his campaign in the European Free Handicap at Newmarket in two weeks time.

Shelley Birkett, who joined David O’Meara a month ago, journeys from her North Yorkshire base to ride Sail Home in the Bet toteswinger Handicap.

Birkett, who claims 3lb, was successful on Sail Home on this course a fortnight ago.

The John Long-trained mare has been raised only 2lb for that success and looks on a competitive mark again.

Poppy Bond bids for a hat- trick in the Bet toteexacta Handicap.

Trained by Alan Bailey, the five-year-old has won at Southwell and Wolverhampton and now bids to add Chelmsford to her tally. A 6lb penalty may not be enough to anchor Graham Gibbons’ in-form mount.

William Buick, who won the world’s richest race - the Dubai World Cup on Prince Bishop at Meydan last weekend - teams up with Wakea in the featured totepool Handicap.

The £20,000 prize fund is a far cry from the £3.8 million won by Prince Bishop.

Wakea, trained by Jeremy Noseda, won handsomely under Ryan Moore at Wolverhampton last time and looks a progressive performer. A follow-up is on the cards.

At Wincanton, Jimmy The Jetplane makes plenty of appeal in the Bet & Watch At winner.co.uk Handicap Hurdle.

The seven-year-old, trained by Kim Bailey, won by five lengths at this track ten days ago and, because that success was achieved in a conditional jockeys’ race, escapes a penalty in this event.

Spellbound may prove the solution to the opening Download The winner.co.uk Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

The Alan King-trained six-year-old came good at Exeter last time and is now set to step up in trip.

This represents a stiffer test of stamina and could eke out further improvement from Spellbound, who will be partnered by accomplished 3lb claimer James Banks.

Also worth noting are Paul Nicholls’ Vesperal Dream (2.50), returning from a five- month break, and Dainty Diva (3.20), runner-up at Taunton and Plumpton on her last two outings.

Chelmsford today: 2.00 Nawaasy (NAP), 2.30 Sail Home, 3.00 Middle East Pearl, 3.30 Poppy Bond, 4.00 Wakea, 4.30 Queen Aggie, 5.00 My Strategy.

Wincanton today: 1.50 Spellbound, 2.20 Jimmy The Jetplane, 2.50 Vesperal Dream, 3.20 Dainty Diva, 3.50 Tarraco, 4.20 Merrion Square, 4.50 Oulamayo, 5.20 Star Trooper.

Today’s other meetings: Kempton and Towcester.
