IT’S Grand National day at Catterick today - the North Yorkshire Grand National - and one horse in the line-up is going for a notable double.

Carli King won the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen on Boxing Day and he’s now on the trail of another marathon contest in the hands of Adam Pogson.

Trained by Caroline Bailey, Carli King took no prisoners on his latest outing. Soon at the head of affairs, he galloped his rivals into submission, eventually winning by 15 lengths.

The handicapper has not shown him any mercy for that resounding success, raising his mark by no less than 13lb, which obviously sets him a more difficult task, against the likes of Incentivise and Barton Gift, first and second in a recent long-distance chase at Warwick and the Scottish raider Settledoutofcourt.

But Carli King has not had an awful lot of racing and, clearly at home in thorough stamina tests, he is fancied to add North Yorkshire to Lincoln in his National quest.

Middleham trainer Phil Kirby brings Lady Buttons back to the racecourse for the Bhest Racing To School Novices’ Hurdle.

A Worcester winner on her hurdles bow, Lady Buttons flopped badly at Wetherby in mid-November and has been absent since. It would be foolish to write her off on the back of one poor effort. She was a smart bumper performer last season, winning twice and being only narrowly denied in Listed company at Aintree in April.

In receipt of over a stone from the dual-winner Ebony Express, Lady Buttons merits the utmost respect.

The nap vote is awarded to Minella Hero in the Yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk Adventure Activities Handicap Hurdle.

Trained at Middleham by Micky Hammond, who sent out two winners at Sedgefield on Tuesday, Minella Hero shaped well to finish fourth at Wetherby on Boxing Day.

Already a Southwell winner this season, he can double his score from the foot of the handicap.

The WL And Hector Christie Memorial Trophy Handicap Chase may fall to Cloudy Wyoming, who is a model of consistency.

Charlie Mann’s gelding has run up a sequence of first and second placed efforts and lost no caste in defeat when chasing home the progressive Oorayvic on this course 11 days ago.

Gavin Sheehan, who has already reached a half-century of winners for the season, has the ride.

Also worth keeping on the right side at Catterick are the promising Intense Tango (12.40), trained by Karl Burke and a good second at Aintree on her recent debut, and Northern Ireland raider Verona Opera (3.40), trained by Stuart Crawford and a fine runner-up to the well-regarded Another Bill at Ayr on her public bow.

At Southwell, Haadeeth can win the opening apprentice claiming stakes under Hollie Doyle.

Trained by David Evans, whose horses are in rude health at present, Haadeeth failed by only three-parts of a length in similar company at Wolverhampton on his latest start. He should go well in this five-furlong dash.

Doncaster trainer John Balding is doing well with Lucky Mark, who bids for a course double inside of a week in the Unibet Offer Daily Jockey/Trainer Specials Handicap.

The sprinter scored here on Sunday with Danny Tudhope replacing the injured Shane Gray. Lucky Mark has a 6lb penalty to carry this time and crosses swords once again with runner-up Amenable.

It will be tougher this time, but he is selected to confirm his superiority even on these revised terms. Tudhope will again ride.

Tim FitzGerald may hold the key to the Ladbrokes Handicap with Warfare.

The gelding was far from disgraced when finishing fourth to Pivotman in an amateur riders’ race at Wolverhampton just over three weeks ago on his first outing since August. He should be sharper and fitter n o w.

Also worth noting at Southwell are Red Stripes (3.20) and Offshore (3.50).

Catterick today: 12.40 intense Tango, 1.10 Lady Buttons, 1.40 Cody Wyoming, 2.10 Buckwheat, 2.40 Carli King, 3.10 Minella Hero (NAP), 3.40 Verona Opera.

Southwell today: 12.50 Haadeeth, 1.20 Landing Night, 1.50 Lucky Market, 2.20 Warfare, 2.50 Lesson In Life, 3.20 Red Stripes, 3.50 Offshore.
