MALTON trainer Richard Fahey and North Yorkshire-based jockey Paul Mulrennan are leading the race to be the best in Yorkshire.

The duo head their respective categories in the battle for the Sky Bet trophies which are presented to the leading trainer and jockey who record the most number of winners on the Yorkshire racecourses during the 2014 Flat season.

The campaign concludes at Doncaster on Saturday, November 8.

Fahey, based at Musley Bank, is attempting to win the award for the fifth time and has recorded an impressive tally of 62 winners on the county's courses, with his nearest rival David O’Meara, of Nawton, 20 winners in arrears.

Fahey’s winning total last year was 65, so he is on course to beat his own record in this category which he achieved in 2009 with 70 winners.

It is a closer call in the jockey competition, with Mulrennan having ridden 47 winners on the county’s tracks, as he attempts to secure the title for the first time.

He is hotly pursued by the champion of the last two seasons, Danny Tudhope, with 41 successes.

The trophies will be presented to the respective winners at the Go Racing In Yorkshire annual awards lunch in December, an event also sponsored by Sky Bet.
