NEWMARKET trainer Hugo Palmer left York a couple of weeks with one winner to his credit and a runner-up who narrowly missed out on a jackpot prize and who seeks compensation at Salisbury today.

Palmer was successful on Knavesmire with Short Squeeze, but he was left frustrated that New Providence was denied the £160,000 first prize in the Doncaster Premier Sales Stakes after failing to overcome a low draw and finding Mubtaghaa too strong in the closing stages.

New Providence still picked up a hefty £63,000 for finishing second but Palmer was left pondering what might have been had his youngster enjoyed the benefit of more company to race with in the centre of the course from her single-figure draw.

It is a measure of a thinking trainer that plans are always at the ready and, even before he left York, Palmer nominated the Country Gentleman's Association Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes, a Group 3 event, as the next target for New Providence.

It's not going to be easy. A useful field has assembled for Salisburys's feature event, but New Providence gets the nap vote to come out on top. Jim Crowley rides.

Richard Fahey, pictured, has a decent chance of landing a couple of rare winners at the course. most notably with Dutch Courage in the EBF Stallions Breeding Winners 'Lochsong' Fillies' Handicap.

Jimmy Fortune's mount has not cut much ice in her recent starts, but she can be excused her latest unplaced effort at York as she was badly hampered by a faller early in the race. She ran a high-class race at York's May meeting and if she could recapture that form, she is in with a big shout in this seven-furlong handicap.

Fortune and Fahey also team up with Dutch Party in the Virginia Walwyn Memorial Quidhampton Maiden Fillies' Stakes. The juvenile finished a good second at Newmarket in May and, although not seen out since, remains a filly of infinite promise.

Clive Cox's Roaslie Bonheur, a winner on her debut at Ripon, would not be one to overlook lightly on her handicap bow in the Quality & Value At Irish Yearling Sales Nursery Handicap, while Go For Broke can provide Gary Mahon with his second winner for new boss Richard Hannon since he moved from Tim Easterby's North Yorkshire yard last November in the CGA Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap.

At Haydock, Dissolution may prove the answer to the opening Betfred Jack Berry MBE Maiden Stakes following his promising effort at York two weeks ago.

Sir Michael Stoute's colt finished fifth to the impressive and well-regarded White Lake in the valuable Convivial Maiden on Knavesmire. This extra furlong will suit him even better and he may prove good enough to take the spoils under James Doyle.

David O'Meara's York specialist Dutch Rose looks sure to go well in the Betfred Injured Jockeys' Fund Conditions Stakes, but Sam James' mount may have to give best to Morache Music, who returned to winning form at Doncaster last month.

Starlight Serenade gets the vote in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Handicap.

Nothing if not consistent, Ralph Beckett's tough filly finished second at Newmarket on her latest start. A Goodwood winner earlier in the season, she can add to that success this afternoon with Graham Gibbons on board.

Ryedale amateur rider Alex French is still seeking his first win after 59 mounts but he might well break his duck on Frosty Berry, trained by Paul Midgley, in the Betfred Please Donate On Your Way Out Handicap for gentleman amateur riders. French finished second on Frosty Berry at Newbury last time. This longer trip may suit even better.
