RELEGATION-THREATENED Tadcaster Magnets delivered a huge shock to York Minster Engineering League leaders Wigginton Grasshoppers - inflicting their first home defeat of the season and in the process reopening both the title and relegation battles in the premier division.

Goalkeeper Toby Wells was Magnets' hero, capping a man-of-the-match performance with a late penalty save as his side held on to a 1-0 win.

The result gives the Taddy team every chance of top-flight survival, while making Wigginton's trip to third-placed Osbaldwick next weekend even more important as they look to hold onto top spot.

Will Deakin's early strike gave Tadcaster the advantage but as the first half moved on it looked very much like a case of when, not if, Grasshoppers would score.

However, some resolute defending and superb goalkeeping from Wells kept the home side at bay.

The second half was much the same with Wells and his defence battling hard, the stopper rounding off his top show by keeping Gary Newton's 85th-minute spot kick.

Second-placed Old Malton St Mary's are now firmly back in the title hunt after they came from behind at half-time to defeat Dringhouses 3-1.

Matthew Mulhearn had given the hosts the lead before the break.

The Malton side can get to within two points of Wigginton by winning their games in hand - and the top two are still to meet.

On any other day, the shared points between Malton & Norton and Sporting Knavesmire would not have been the worst of results, but they both now find themselves locked in a scrap with Tadcaster Magnets to avoid the drop.

Steve Twamley had looked to have won M&N the points but Ryan Gothard smashed in a stoppage time free-kick to earn Knavesmire a draw.

Dan Barrett hit a hat-trick and Tom Anderson a brace as Dunnington recorded a 5-0 win over York RI to move up to sixth in the table.

In division one, Mike Braithwaite, Daniel Rodwell and Paul Moran all netted for Thorpe United as they secured their promotion back to the premier division with a 3-1 win over promotion hopefuls Kirkbymoorside.

Thorpe have been out of the top tier since being relegated alongside Nestle Rowtree 10 seasons ago.

Pocklington replaced Kirkby in second place after a bloodless 5-0 win at Wilberfoss.

Foss now need a miracle if they are to survive the drop after Harrison Signs condemned Brooklyn to division two, and virtually assured their own survival in the process.

Alex Day (2), Neil Richardson and Lee Downham fired Signs to a 4-2 success over the Malton side, who have now suffered back-to-back relegations.

In division two, both Heslington and Huby United played their final games of a torrid season in which the pair have been relegated to division three after collecting just a mere five points between them.

Heslington suffered a 4-0 defeat to Civil Service, whose goals came from Joshua Parker (2), Cameron Burdass and Sam Hardcastle.

Huby's goal from Liam Kettlewell proved nothing more than a consolation as they suffered a 9-1 reversal to Bishopthorpe United.

The bad weather claimed all of the division three fixtures but Elm Park's game with Pollington in division four got the green light, the home side winning 2-1 to open up the promotion battle in which several teams are still in with a chance of moving up a tier.
