YORK Schoolboys Under-12s netted a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw from their league clash at East Riding.

York's first good opportunity of the game came when Paul Iggulden lofted a free-kick beyond the opposition backline for Liam Mainprize to chase. The East Riding keeper was quickly off his line to make a save, and then kept out Jamie Hudson's follow-up effort.

After 18 minutes, East Riding went ahead when their midfielder fired home direct from a free-kick.

York went in search of an equaliser, and Adam Clarkson was unlucky not to get it when his near post header went over the bar.

The visitors then put together their best move of the match, resulting in a right wing cross from Ronnie Kelly, which Mainprize would have turned in from close range, but for some excellent goalkeeping from the East Riding stopper.

York continued to push forward, and in the last 10 minutes won a succession of right wing corners.

Ryan Evans delivery for each one was top class. The first was met by Iggulden, who saw his header cleared off the line. The second was met by the same player and brushed the top of the bar.

With three minutes to go, York finally got the goal their pressure deserved.

Another Evans corner saw Iggulden jump highest to head towards goal, the ball bounced off a defender and fell to Reuben Pugh who drilled home from six yards.

York's players went wild in celebration as that goal preserved their long unbeaten record in league and cup matches.

York's Under-13s were defeated 5-1 by their Wakefield counterparts.

Although Wakefield looked dangerous early on, Tom Coy's defensive work was the starting point for a couple of York chances.

The first allowed Tommy Cahill and Kaiden Butler to pass through midfield and release Owen Dunckley who saw his shot saved by the Wakefield keeper.

However, Wakefield reasserted themselves and their pressure paid off when a corner was headed in at the far post.

Almost immediately Wakefield won another corner. This time, York failed to clear their lines leaving their rivals with an easy tap in to make it 2-0.

It was 3-0 early in the second half when Wakefield broke through and finished well.

Shortly after the resulting kick-off, York were awarded a free-kick just inside the Wakefield half. Tom Algar sent a lofted cross into the box which cleared the defence and bounced over the keeper to make it 3-1.

York then had further attacking success. Jack Maeer put through some dangerous balls for the strikers to run onto. Ellis Cataneo forced the keeper to make a full stretch save from distance and Kaiden Butler, Dillon Meehan, Matthew Dawes and Finley Coad all applied pressure.

However, it was Wakefield who scored next as they cut York wide open to make it 4-1. Shortly afterwards they netted again from distance to make the final score 5-1.

Elsewhere York & District schools' Under-11s travelled to Sunderland FC’s training ground for the North of England seven-a-side tournament.

In their group, York claimed two draws against Sheffield and Newcastle, defeating Preston and losing to Darlington.

York’s coaches were pleased with three out of the four performances. They asked the players to view their defeat against Darlington as part of the learning curve that comes with representative football.

Newcastle went on to win the tournament and will represent the North of England at the National finals alongside runners-up Leeds.

York’s joint players of the tournament were Alfie Cresswell and Leo Berriman.
