YORK Schoolboys under-13s overcame snow blizzards and hosts Barnsley to storm to a 5-0 victory in South Yorkshire.

Tom Algar, Matty Dawes, Archie Collie, Nathan Heaton and man-of-the-match Kaiden Butler were all on target on a pitch where visibility was difficult and the touchlines were unidentifiable at times.

The visitors attacked form the start with Dillon Meehan sprinting down the right wing and crossing into the box, where Heaton rose above the Barnsley defence, but narrowly heading the ball wide.

Tommy Cahill was then brought down a few yards from the edge of the Barnsley box during another of his rapid breaks, with Algar stepping up to take the resultant free kick and effortlessly firing into the top right-hand corner.

Moments later, Meehan again set up Heaton for a long-range shot that the Tykes keeper managed to save.

At the other end, Algar cleared a shot off the line before he tested the home net-minder with another free kick following a foul on Butler.

Thanks to superb work from Jack Maeer on the left, with Will Hotson covering, Barnsley’s attacks were largely coming to nothing and excellent link-up play between Butler, Heaton and Cahill also relieved the pressure on York.

The away team went on to double their lead just before half-time when Heaton passed to Butler, who took the ball down the right before crossing into centre of the box for Dawes to calmly fire home.

Early in the second half, Colley extended the advantage, while Meehan saw a blocked shot finish narrowly over the bar.

Butler went on to show some great skill in the box before winning a penalty, which he took himself but was saved.

York continued to drive forward, though, with Algar sending Colley through on goal following a solid winning tackle, only for the latter to shoot wide, before Heaton scored from a corner to make it 4-0.

Despite being reduced to ten men following injuries to Dawes and Cahill, York wrapped up the scoring when Colley crossed for Butler to slide in and poke the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Butler was named star man by the match official.

York Schoolboy U11s also returned with a victory from Barnsley, with Kiam Browne, an own goal, Charlie Thompson and Leo Berriman securing a 4-1 triumph.

The origins of the opening goal came from Leo Berriman, Adi Bajaziti and James Rennocks combining to apply defensive pressure on the home team.

Their tenacious closing down resulted in the Barnsley defence clearing the ball to Browne, who was on the edge of the area when he hit a wonderful half-volley into the goal.

Shortly afterwards, York were awarded a free kick in the Barnsley half and, when Thompson whipped a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, an unfortunate Barnsley defender converted the ball into his own net.

Before the half drew to a close the Tykes reduced the deficit but, just moments into the second period, captain Thompson scored York’s third with an accurately-finished header.

Then, with ten minutes of the game remaining, Berriman scored a peach of a goal from way out on the right-hand side of the pitch.

The opposition had also been kept at bay throughout, meanwhile, by some important stops by goalkeeping pair Jacob Bryant and Lewis Mills.
