LEADERS Wigginton Grasshoppers pulled further away at the top of the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division with a 3-2 win over Osbaldwick.

Victory over their bogey side means they now have a four-point advantage over their closest challengers, who were all in cup action.

Osso could have been ahead in the first minute, with the hosts’ 16-year-old keeper Myles Whitehead, on his Wigginton debut, having to make a fantastic save early on.

The visitors saw two more opportunities denied by the woodwork before the hosts took the lead against the run of play, Gary Newton scoring directly from a corner.

Jon-Paul Vass levelled just before half-time, finishing an excellent solo run with a clinical curling strike.

Wigginton assumed control in the second period, Matt Tiplady’s floated ball being met with a perfect volley by Neale Holmes, but they were pegged back immediately, Danny Penrose striking over the keeper from the halfway line.

Chances followed for both sides, but Wiggy sealed the points when Jake Duckworth's cut-back was lashed home by Jamie Willstrop.

At the other end of the table, basement side York RI picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Sporting Knavesmire.

Haxby Town maintained their perfect start in division two, goals from Josh Leeming and Adam Chaplin firing them to a 2-1 win over Barmby Moor.

Danny Franks and Charlie Coupland both scored hat-tricks as Strensall enjoyed a 12-0 romp at Heslington.

A one-sided contest was made even more so by a second-half sending-off.

A second-half own goal gifted Bishopthorpe United a 1-0 win at Civil Service, while Huby United lost 7-3 at home to Stamford Bridge. Browne, Nicholson and Mercer were Huby's scorers.
