CAPTAIN Chris Dyson and a penalty from Scott Nicholls saw the York Minster Engineering League representative side win through to the second round of the FA Inter-League Cup.

The hosts defeated their West Riding County Amateur League counterparts 2-1 at Tadcaster Albion’s i2i Stadium in front of a 75-strong crowd and will now travel to Chester and Wirral in the next round.

With the game starting at a fast temp, a lively West Riding front-line could have opened the scoring in the first minute, but it was Chris Smith and Simon Woods’s men who forged in from from the resulting goal kick.

Dale Holden subsequently picked out Jamie Wilstrop neatly and he, in turn, fed a lovely pass through to Dyson who, finding himself one-on-one with the away keeper, slid a great finish into the bottom corner.

With the West Riding fighting hard to get back into the game, York keeper Michael Clancy made a smart save at the feet an opposition forward.

But it was the home team that went on to double their advantage after being awarded a penalty in the 11th minute for deliberate handball by the West Riding centre-half.

YMEL lynchpin Nichols then calmly stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot kick.

With the York side now well and truly settled into the game, they were looking in full control with only a couple of long balls between the centre-halves showing any sign of threat from West Riding.

On the half-hour mark, Andy Simpson was sent racing through on goal only to see his effort pass just the wrong side of the post and, just before the whistle went for half-time, the Minster team could, and probably should, have been further ahead when Wilstrop was presented with a good opportunity to make it 3-0 only to pull his shot wide of goal.

The second half followed a very similar pattern to the first with YMEL having a couple of chances to extend their lead before, in the 57th minute, the West Riding number ten finished a neat move to reduce the deficit.

In an effort to protect the lead, the trio of Mark Godsall, Jake Duckworth and James Edmond were sent on and York did finish the game the strongest with Dyson having a couple more opportunities.

His last was quickly followed by the full-time whistle.

Commenting on a successful afternoon, a York Minster Engineering League spokesman said: “ We would like to thank all who turned up to support the boys and our premier division officer Bill Pearce for all the hard work he has put into organising thiegame.

“We’d also like to thank Danny Gore and all associated with Tadcaster Albion for allowing us to use their facilities.”

A date for the game at Chester and Wirral will be announced shortly.
