YORK Schoolboys Under 13s put in a commanding performance to beat Scarborough 8-2 in the first round of the English Schools’ Football Association Boys U13 PlayStation Inter Association Trophy.

The home side once again made a fast start, and soon got their noses in front, Kaiden Butler firing a dipping effort into the bottom left corner.

Scarborough levelled not long after, however, as their forward was brought down inside the box, and the resultant penalty was scored straight down the middle.

As Scarborough attempted to get a foothold in the game, York responded with a Tommy Cahill goal, who met Jack Hancock’s cross at the back post to power a header into the roof of the net.

Dillon Meehan then bagged his first goal of the season with a looping header from a Cahill cross.

York went into the break two goals to the good.

The hosts’ second-half plan to keep things tight for the first five minutes came undone almost immediately, as some smart play from the Scarborough winger saw him cruise past two York defenders and fire into the near corner.

From then on, it was one-way traffic. Will Hotson and Tom Algar at centre half controlled the game, while Kieran Clayton dropped deeper to dictate play with pin-point passes.

With one of these, he found Hancock, who showed composure to slide past the keeper for York’s fourth.

Clinical on the counter, the hosts took further control of the game through Cole Gayles, before man-of-the-match Butler completed his hat-trick with a tap-in and a volley either side of Meehan’s second.

York Schoolboys Under-12s shared the spoils with East Riding in a friendly fixture that finished 2-2.

For their first home game in three fixtures, York had a full squad to choose from, as players returned from injury.

The hosts started well, creating a number of chances, but it was East Riding who took the lead from a whipped free kick that was flicked into the bottom corner.

York continued to dominate, and were rewarded as Liam Mainprize pounced on a rebound from the keeper’s save to equalise.

Just before the end of the first period, Ronnie Kelly capitalised on a defensive error to give York the lead.

The second period started with East Riding applying the pressure, and soon getting the equaliser with a superb long-range strike.

York woke up after the goal but could not find the winner, despite their numerous chances in the closing stages.

Man of the match was Paul Iggulden.

Goals were in no short supply for the U11s as they began their defence of the York & District Schoolboys league title, beating East Riding 8-1.

Charlie Thompson bagged three, with James Rennocks and Alex Widdup netting a brace apiece.

Thompson struck into the bottom corner to break the deadlock, followed by three quick-fire goals courtesy of Rennocks, Widdup and another for Thompson.

In the second period, Thompson completed his hat-trick, before East Riding replied with an effort that flew into the bottom corner.

The final quarter of an hour was all York’s, however, as Widdup, Leo Berriman and Rennocks all hit the back of the net.
