YORK Schoolboys Under-11s have won the West Yorkshire League without losing a game.

A 6-2 victory in the final fixture of the season against Scarborough secured the title by virtue of a superior goal difference over runners-up Leeds.

With so much hanging on the result, York were quick out of the blocks and two early goals from Liam Mainprize and Fraser Clarke settled nerves.

Scarborough got over their initial setback and pinned York back with some fine passing football.

It was no surprise when they pulled a goal back after 18 minutes with a long-range strike beyond the reach of York keeper George Brown.

The second half was a tense affair with York knowing a draw would not be good enough.

Scarborough crashed a shot against the crossbar with 18 minutes to play.

But York extended their lead when a Scarborough defender turned the ball past his own keeper following good work by Jamie Hudson and Ronnie Kelly, and Ben Myers made it 4-1 with a free-kick.

Scarborough pulled a goal back to make it 4-2 but York finished the game in style with two goals in the final four minutes from Noah Morgan and Jack Whalen.

York’s overall league record was 11 wins and one draw from 12 games.

Adam Clarkson was named man of the match but coach Conor Qualter praised the togetherness of the squad who beat off competition from teams in bigger areas like Leeds and Sheffield to win the league.

York Schoolboys U13s ended their season with a 4-0 home win over Spen Valley.

After a scrappy start, the hosts started to string together the more telling passes and Harry Tinker opened the scoring on 20 minutes when rifling home a loose ball inside the area.

York lost striker Ben Thornton to injury after a clash of heads but they soon doubled their lead after a good one-touch move cut through the visitors and saw Eliott Heath finish from inside the six-yard box.

Spen Valley kept up the pressure but the home defence led by Ben Hudson stayed firm, with George Turbine looking to take the game to the away side every opportunity he got.

From a corner late in the first half, Tinker got his second of the game with a well-placed header.

The second half started with York on the front foot, Will Hollings creating chances and Lewis Humphreys and Elliott Rayner both going close.

They saw Elliott Rayner depart injured after challenging for a 50-50 ball, with Joe Roughley pushed further upfield on to the wing.

And it was Roughley who completed the scoring late on, slotting home unopposed at the back post after being played in by Hollings.
