NEWLY crowned champions Malt Shovel ended their Fastpack Ltd York Sunday Morning League division one season in fitting fashion by beating NUR 5-1 and Wigginton Grasshoppers 2-1.

It meant they completed the season unbeaten.

The game with NUR was goalless at the interval but Malt Shovel went nap in the second half while Mikey Stannard scored NUR’s consolation.

Wigginton travelled to Malt Shovel on Tuesday but were pipped in a close game as the unbeaten champions ended on a high.

Third-placed York Nomads, after their recent cup successes, were brought back down to earth in a 3-2 defeat at Hounds.

The hosts scored twice without reply in the first half and, although Nomads staged a comeback to level, Hounds bagged the winner.

Sam Cable, Benedict Ewart and Thomas Hogg were their marksmen, Samson Wildwood and an own goal finding the net for Nomads.

Nomads, though, bounced back with a 4-0 midweek win over Bubwith thanks to a hat-trick from Liam Flanagan and a goal from Cameron Mulhearn.

Brayton cemented a fifth-placed finish in their first season in division one by beating Marcia Bishopthorpe 4-2.

Marcia took the lead after 11 minutes, but Adam Gilliland went through on goal to equalise and Patrick Guest’s long ball saw Kyle Wilks slot home a minute before half-time to put Brayton 2-1 ahead.

Brayton had a man sent off in the second half but increased their lead 10 minutes from time with a Ryan Lofthouse penalty and substitute Adam Cook soon made it 4-1.

Marcia pulled one goal back late on.

Bottom-of-the-table Cliffe crashed 11-0 at Bubwith. Kristian Wood scored a hat-trick while Gary Chapman and Jamie Sedman bagged braces. Jason Crisp, Jordan Layburn, Mike Braithwaite and Matthew Howden also netted.

Cliffe had a much closer game against Hounds in midweek, before losing 2-1.

A big shock in division two saw bottom-of-the-table Rawcliffe Crusaders beat leaders Selby Olympia 6-2.

It was only the second time Olympia had lost this season and it enabled Hambleton to leapfrog them at the top after thrashing Elmpark 14-2.

Selby Olympia and Hambleton now face each other in a title decider on Sunday.
