SELBY Town have sacked manager Nigel Emery amid a row over comments posted on social media - with Emery quickly hitting back.

He had been in charge for 14 months and was initially joint-manager with Reuben Pearse, the son of the club chairman.

Pearse junior stepped down as joint-manager in August last year and was replaced by former boss Graham Hodder, who quit after just four months in the role.

Emery had been assisted by Nick Peacock for the final three months of the season.

The Robins finished the campaign unbeaten in nine games but were still 21 points adrift of the play-off zone in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League first division.

The club released a statement yesterday morning saying: “Mr Emery has used some vitriolic comments about the club and posted these all over the social media.

“Some of his comments have been both unfounded and personal and completely broke the club’s code of conduct. Thus making his continued position untenable.

“The committee voted unanimously that it would no longer be in the club’s interest for Mr Emery to remain.”

Emery hit back with a statement on social media claiming that, despite costing less money, his team had this year enjoyed Selby's best points return in seven seasons and nearly doubled the average crowd.

He claimed he was sacked over the phone on Tuesday night, criticised the Robins committee and claimed the club was "poorly run".

The club is now advertising for a new first team manager, who holds a UEFA ‘B’ licence, and has set a deadline of Friday, May 6 for applications.
