LUKE Jones hit a hat-trick as York Under-14 Schoolboys convincingly won their penultimate fixture 6-1 at Spen Valley.

The visitors also saw Elliot Oliver, Liam White and Charlie Fort make the scoresheet.

With Harvey Stephenson, Oliver, Ben Calam and Fort dominating the midfield exchanges from the start, Jones opened the scoring after just three minutes, having raced on to a defence-splitting pass from White.

Fort went on to force a save from the Spen keeper, while Jones had a goal-bound chip cleared off the line.

York doubled their advantage on ten minutes when Jones’ header from a Stephenson corner was only parried as far as Oliver, who pounced from close range.

With the defensive line of Leo Jones, Ben Rhodes, Ben Fawcett and Sid McCoy holding firm, Joseph Hodges was not required to make his first save until the 23rd minute, before another perfectly-weighted White pass enabled Luke Jones to score his second of the match.

There were also further first-half chances for Luke Jones, Calam and Ben Fawcett, whilst Oliver forced the Valley keeper into a fine save.

The fourth goal was added, though, when possession was won straight from the restart by Luke Jones who teed up White to make no mistake with his left foot.

White went on to force another flying save from a Calam corner.but, although Joshua Byfield and Olly Hanley caused problems running the wings, Valley got their consolation on 54 minutes.

York were, nevertheless, undeterred and, having put the opposition keeper under pressure and forced a sliced clearance from a pass back, Fort headed a spinning ball into the goal.

The final outcome was then sealed when the referee deemed that Oliver had been fouled from Stephenson’s flag kick and Luke Jones drilled the resulting penalty underneath the diving Spen net-minder.

Byfield and Calam might have gone on to add further efforts during a fine display that saw the pressing and work-rate of Oliver and McCoy rewarded by the sharing of the man-of-the-match honours.

Elsewhere, York U14 Schoolboys were knocked out of the West Yorkshire Cup quarter-finals after a 3-1 defeat at Derby.

The visitors started well with central-midfielders Dan Tingle and Jackson Cowl working tirelessly to create chances for strikers Lewis Humphreys and Ben Thornton up front.

Midway through the first half, though, York were dealt a blow when Taylor Bell left the field with a head injury.

A free kick then deceived everybody, including keeper Toby Warren, to give Derby the lead.

That was cancelled out five minutes into the second half when Elliott Rayner beat his full back and crossed into the box for Elliott Heath to calmly roll the ball into the net.

But the hosts got their noses in front again and added a third from an edge-of-the-box effort.

Late shots from Humphreys, Thornton and Rayner, meanwhile, could not turn the tide.
