A LATE penalty from Lee Gaskell gave visitors Ramsbottom United victory in Evo-Stik League Division One North at Tadcaster Albion after the Brewers missed a number of gilt-edged chances.

The visitors who carved out the first chance of the match, Ryan Salmon leaping to glance wide of the goal from seven yards.

The Brewers, who brought in Fatlum Ibrahimi for the unavailable Jono Greening, responded well, however, with Rob Youhill delivering low to Tom Corner, with the striker’s snap-shot being well blocked.

Josh Barrett and Josh Grant were performing well at the back for Taddy, Barrett brilliantly denying Darrhyl Mason a clear route on goal, while left back Grant refused to be beaten and also offered a threat going forward.

Taddy’s only real chance of the first half came two minutes from the break as Josh Greening stuck out a foot and deflected Corner’s skewed effort off target.

The Brewers came out fighting in the second 45 and took the game to Ramsbottom by pressing higher up the pitch.

Ten minutes into the half, Youhill jinked past his man before fizzing in a terrific cross but no yellow shirt was on hand to tap into the empty net.

Josh Greening and Corner both misfired half-decent opportunities wide before the latter missed the best chance of the match.

Conor Sellars threaded Greening in down the left, and he reversed it into the path of Corner, who poked agonisingly wide from close range.

But it was Ramsbottom who scored the only goal of the game 11 minutes from time.

Gregg Anderson’s mistimed tackle on the effervescent Mason left referee Simon Porter with no option but to point to the spot.

Gaskel struck the penalty well, Chandler Hallwood getting a hand to the ball but being unable to keep it out.

Ramsbottom endured an onslaught in the last ten minutes, and the final chance fell to Dan Thirkell when a deep free-kick dropped to the midfielder at the back post but United keeper Martin Fearson did well to narrow the angle and thwart the danger.

In the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division, second-placed Pickering Town needed a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw at Maltby Main.

Ryan Carroll netted for the hosts in the 22nd minute, Sam Denton equalising in the 89th minute, while Scarborough Athletic’s leveller came even later at home to Trafford.

Joshua Granite had put the visitors ahead in the 83rd minute, Benny Igiehon netting seven minutes after.

In Division One, play-off chasing Knaresborough Town triumphed 4-0 at Ollerton Town, courtesy of Brad Walker, James Bradley, Fraser Lancaster and Colin Heath, but Selby Town lost 2-1 at Winterton Rangers, despite Wayne Brook’s third-minute goal.

Simon Ainge took his seasonal goal tally to 17 with a hat-trick as Harrogate Town held Vanarama National North leaders AFC Fylde to a 3-3 draw at the CNG Stadium.
