THE gap between the top two and the rest of the York Minster Engineering League premier division increased slightly at the weekend.

Both Wigginton Grasshoppers and Huntington Rovers registered convincing wins while the three teams below them failed to collect any points.

Wigginton erased memories of their 4-3 York FA Cup defeat to Sporting Knavesmire, defeating the fourth-placed side 5-1 with a fine performance.

Knavesmire applied some early pressure to the Grasshoppers goal but the defence held firm and the home side soon began to get a foothold in the game.

Jamie Green headed home Neale Holmes' corner to put Wiggy in front after 25 minutes before Holmes turned provider once again, squaring the ball for Gary Newton to double the lead ten minutes later.

A Newton Shot was parried to Matthew Tiplady on the stroke of half-time, with the striker making no mistake from five yards out.

'Hoppers began the second half where they had left off – an eye of the needle pass from Jordan Holt setting Newton away free to score his 19th goal of the season.

Knavesmire struck back with a thunderous strike from the edge of the 18-yard box, but a fantastic glancing header from Tiplady rounded off an excellent day at the office for the league leaders.

Brooklyn scored an early goal at Huntington which only served to spring Rovers into a spirited response.

They soon drew level with a delightful finish from James Edmond. Jon James then put the home side 2-1 ahead before Chris Dyson missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time as Rovers pushed to go further ahead.

Huntington came out firing again in the second half as James added his second of the game before Dyson produced a quality volley to make it 4-1.

George Brown added Rovers' fifth before Brooklyn hit a late consolation to make it 5-2 at the final whistle.

F1 Racing pulled off the surprise result of the day, netting a 3-1 success at Dunnington.

The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead through Chris Dempsey and Alex Martin before Marcos Garcia made it 2-1 just before the interval.

F1 started the second half strongly but could not capitalise, and instead had to rely on an outstanding save from goalkeeper Dan Calliste to preserve their lead.

Dempsey then thundered home a free-kick to extend F1's advantage to 3-1 – a score that proved to be the final result with both sides missing decent chances late on in the game.

A Danny Penrose goal after 25 minutes proved to be the only difference between Osbaldwick and York RI as the home side collected the spoils and pulled themselves firmly away from the drop zone.

Old Malton St Mary's edged a close-fought game at Church Fenton White Horse, eventually winning 2-1.
