YORK Schoolboys Under-12s gave an outstanding performance in winning 5-2 away to Hull City's Academy U12s - on a pitch labelled Hull Ice Rink.

This friendly was York's first taste of 11-a-side action, the rise from the usual nine-a-side giving them a taste of what is to come next season.

It was made harder by the pitch being covered in snow and ice.

But York started brightly, going two up inside five minutes through Harrison Cain and Cole Gayles.

Oliver Tarbitt then went off after a head collision and Hull, a man up, pulled one goal back.

With no substitutes to call on, Tarbitt bravely went back on and duly put in a strong display in the middle alongside Ellis Cattaneo, while the tenacious Tommy Cahill continued his fine form,

York began the second period superbly and, after a great spell of pressure, with Dillon Meehan and Matthew Dawes relentless down the wings, Gayles fired into the top corner.

York's work-rate proved too much for Hull, and, from a loose ball, Matthew Dawes squared to Cain to make it 4-1.

Hull fought back in the third period. York keeper Noah Ellis was a fine last line of defence but the hosts pulled one back with a penalty.

But in the final period, York got back on the front foot and, from a Dawes corner, Kaiden Butler - who has recently signed for Hull - headed into the top corner.
