WITH the top two clubs Wigginton Grasshoppers and Huntington Rovers both involved in the North Riding County Cup, rivals Dringhouses and Sporting Knavesmire took the opportunity to close the gap at the top of the York Minster Engineering premier league.

Third-placed Dringhouses were boosted by the return of free-scoring striker Wilson Briggs (pictured) and he picked up where he had left off – hitting a hat-trick in the 3-0 triumph over Copmanthorpe.

Knavesmire, meanwhile, had a goal in each half from Tom Owen and Danny Owers to thank for their 2-0 victory over F1 Racing which keeps them in fourth place, on 33 points, just behind Dringhouses on goal difference.

Second-placed Huntington are on 34 points and leaders Wigginton have 37 points.

Dunnington moved up to fifth spot in the table following a 3-0 success at Tadcaster Magnets.

Church Fenton White Horse also secured a 3-0 victory, defeating Brooklyn for their eighth win of the campaign.

Malton & Norton threw everything bar the kitchen sink at Osbaldwick in the first 15 minutes of their game but some fantastic saves from goalkeeper Tom Young kept his side in the match.

After half an hour, Osbaldwick took the lead when Chris Bilton crossed the ball for his brother Andrew to head home.

In the second half, the Biltons linked up again for goal number two – Andrew tapping home to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Nick Lawrie wrapped up the points for Osso when he finished off a one-on-one to complete a surprise victory.

Both Huntington and Old Malton St Mary’s, meanwhile, progressed to the last four of the North Riding County Cup after quarter-final victories this weekend.

Huntington beat University of York 5-2, while St Mary’s enjoyed an entertaining 3-1 victory over 10-man Wigginton Grasshoppers.
