YORK Under-11s Schoolboy footballers have completed a remarkable achievement - finishing top of their regional qualification league after winning all eight of their games.

The latest of these was another hard-working 2-0 win at Scarborough.

The game was a tight affair for the first period but second-half goals from Ronnie Kelly and Bobby Boyson completed York's clean sweep.

On the road, they have now beaten Sheffield, Leeds 'B', East Riding and Scarborough, while at home they have defeated Barnsley, Nottingham, Derby and Leeds 'A'.

As a result, York qualify in first place for the top-four play-off competition starting in the new year.

York coaching staff member Brendan Qualter said: "The boys have conducted themselves very well both on and off the pitch.

"They have become a tight group who have pulled together remarkably well in such a short period of time."

York U13s Schoolboys' last game of 2016 ended in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley.

The hosts, with a massive height advantage, started strongly, the game only five minutes old when they took the lead before York keeper Toby Warren had touched the ball yet.

They doubled the lead inside 15 minutes, Warren this time getting a hand to the ball but unable to stop it crossing the line.

York looked shell-shocked but they did not crumble and set about trying to get back into the game, Lewis Humphreys and Eliott Heath leading from the front.

As they settled, they took the game to the home side, Taylor Bell being his usual energetic self, regularly creating chances.

York also held their own in the midfield battle through Jackson Cowl, Harry Tinker and Oliver Kilvington, and by half-time the visitors were getting on top but with nothing to show for their efforts.

Elliot Rayner worked hard down the right and defensively Dan Tingle, Ben Pearson and Joe Roughley fought to keep Barnsley at bay.

The second half continued in such vain, with defences on top, Ben Hudson having a fine game at centre-back for York.

Will Hollings in midfield drove the away side forward with passes that had opponents at full stretch, while Eliott Heath had a couple of long-range efforts and Elliot Rayner and Oliver Kilvington had dangerous free kicks that came to nothing. A Bell cross also ran along the goal-line.

York sent Ben Hudson forward late on, trying to utilise his height, and they finished on the front foot, but there was no way back.
