WIGGINTON Grasshoppers moved to the top of the York Minster Engineering League Premier Division on goal difference following former leaders Huntington Rovers' second defeat in a row.

After suffering a loss at Dunnington the previous week, Rovers endured a nervy start to their game with Copmanthorpe, with both sides glad to get to the interval goalless.

However, an action-packed second period contained five goals, with Copmanthorpe triumphing 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Jake Moyes, a win which enabled Copmanthorpe to climb three places to tenth.

Wigginton continued their recent good league form with an 8-1 success at home to York RI.

Matthew Tiplady tapped in from close range after a minute to give the hosts the perfect start, only to see his goal cancelled out three minutes later following a defensive error which allowed Ben Jones to level the scores.

Hoppers restored their lead in the tenth minute when a Gary Newton free-kick rattled the bar and left Terry Taylor with a simple tap-in, and went further clear four minutes later when Newton rounded the keeper to slot home.

A couple of neat finishes from Tiplady allowed the striker to complete his hat-trick on the half-hour before Dale Holding made it 6-1 on the stroke of half-time with a clinical finish from a narrow angle.

Five minutes into the second half came the goal of the game from Taylor, a magnificent lob from over 40 yards out.

Jamie Green rounded off the scoring late in the game as Wigginton reached the summit for the first time this season.

Sporting Knavesmire and Church Fenton, who are third and sixth respectively, shared the points following a 2-2 draw.

Andrew Simpson book-ended the scoring for Knavesmire, who led initially before having to fight back to save a point after being reduced to ten men in the second period.

Old Malton and Dunnington, two heavyweight sides of recent years, fought out yet another close contest, with the latter emerging as 3-2 winners.

Malton & Norton are steadily racking up the points in fourth place, a Simon Reeves hat-trick and a Scott Preston goal proving enough to see off visiting F1 Racing.

The away side were still in the match after half-time when George Trifan made it 1-1 from the penalty spot, but they were made to pay when a red card and an injury combined to see them finish the game with just nine players.

Danny Penrose gave Osbaldwick the lead at home to Dringhouses but Matthew Mulhearn inspired a comeback for the away side with a quickfire brace that edged them into the lead.

Sam Drake made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time, with Liam Robertson and Jordan Outerbridge adding to the scoring in the second period to round off a convincing 5-1 success.

Tadcaster Magnets and Brooklyn both collected a valuable point from a 1-1 draw, but neither side will be happy with the result as the business end of the season approaches.
