WIGGINTON Grasshoppers retained their York Sunday Morning League division one title after a 4-2 win over Hounds at Mill Lane.

Jamie Willstrop opened the scoring after 20 minutes, rifling his shot beyond Dave Bramley in the Hounds goal.

The scoreline remained unchanged for the rest of the half, although both sides squandered plenty of chances. Paul Wilson and Jordan Holt made notable blocks to keep the Hounds attack at bay.

‘Hoppers doubled their lead at the start of the second half, Neale Holmes following up his own first effort to send the ball over the line.

A Hounds corner caused problems for the home side and Ben Yorke headed home to bring his side back into the game.

Wigginton took no time to respond though, Holmes breaking clear to drive a low finish into the far corner and double his tally as the home side restored their two-goal cushion.

Chris Jackson then raced onto a long ball and headed over the onrushing Wilson from 18 yards to make it 3-2.

Hounds enjoyed a sustained period of pressure as they pushed for the equaliser. The champions proved resilient though, Matthew Tiplady firing home to seal a 4-2 victory over their rivals.

Wigginton’s victory means that they have completed the same feat as last year, a treble of the division one title, the League Cup and the York FA Cup. In both years they have also been beaten finalists in the Senior Challenge Trophy, to Dunnington and York Nomads respectively.

Cliffe all but wrapped up the division two title with a 4-1 victory at Wentworth.

Mark Bennett and Nathan Parker both bagged braces in the win, meaning that Cliffe now just need a point from their remaining four games to make certain of the division two crown.
