YORK Nomads avenged defeat by Wigginton Grasshoppers in the York FA Cup final defeat by putting their rivals to the sword in the final of the York Sunday Morning League Senior Challenge Trophy – earning a 5-1 victory.

The game started evenly as Josh Luckhurst went close for Wigginton, before James Edmond's diving header found the net for Nomads only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

Jamie Willstrop and Jordan Holt had shots pushed onto the post by Nomads’ Tom Young, either side of a thunderous volley from Edmond which put his side into the lead.

The second half saw Nomads assume control, with a looping 18 yard finish from Liam Flanagan increasing his side’s lead to two.

Young made two further fantastic stops as ‘Hoppers failed to match their opposition’s quality in front of goal.

Chris Dyson added a third before Edmond’s long-range low drive made it 4-0 to Nomads. Flanagan added a second of his own with another pinpoint finish to make it 5-0 before Luckhurst struck a late consolation for Wigginton.

The NUR took on division two champions-elect Cliffe FC in the final of the Junior Challenge Trophy.

The first half wasn’t much of a spectacle as both defences snuffed out any attacks, with NUR goalkeeper Jamie Ward controlling his area and mopping up all of Cliffe’s crosses.

As the half drew to a close, Danny Cotton escaped his marker, only to be denied by the Cliffe stopper with the only real chance of the first period.

The Goole side came out much the stronger in the second half and NUR finally took the lead when Rob Constable’s inch-perfect pass allowed Mikey Stannard to place his shot beyond the Cliffe keeper’s despairing dive.

Cliffe responded with some urgency and only a great save from Ward prevented them from drawing level.

With ten minutes to go, the NUR extended their lead, Pete Knight making the most of a great advantage played by the referee to feed Cotton, who slotted home.

In division one, Hounds defeated Quakerwood 7-3 to set up a crunch match with Wigginton Grasshoppers last night.

Quakerwood took the lead early on with a well-worked goal, Ryan Day’s cross being turned in by Myron Turbine. Hounds bounced back, with Chris Jackson hitting a first-half hat-trick and Gary Collier also obliging to give their side a 4-1 half-time lead.

After the interval, a cracking shot from Day beat the Hounds goalkeeper on the near post to make it 4-2 before Hounds went further clear through Collier . Tommy Medd then chipped the keeper to make it 5-3 and Quakerwood had the ball in the net twice more, only to see their efforts disallowed by the referee.

Hounds upped their game once more and sealed the points as goals from Gary Chapman and Richard Gladwell made it 7-3.

In division two, York Medics scored two goals in each half to claim a 4-0 win over Knapton Lions.
