WIGGINTON Grasshoppers retained their York FA Sunday Senior Cup earlier this month – but were made to work hard by York Nomads throughout a hard-fought even contest.

Grasshoppers went close after seven minutes when Steve Jarvis’ curling shot hit the Nomads post, and they then spawned an even better chance as Tom Metcalfe’s penalty was saved by man of the match James Edmund.

However on 34 minutes, Jamie Wilstrop’s close rage shot hit Nomads keeper Edmund and ballooned into the net to put Grasshoppers 1-0 up at the break.

Following a scrappy start to the second half, where Wiggington had the better of play, Nomads Chris Dyson’s header hit the bar and Matt Hattee's follow up shot went over the bar with the open goal at his mercy.

Nomads had more chances around the 70 minute mark, the best of which was a Danny Penrose header saved by Grasshoppers Nichol Mackenzie.

But Wigginton held out to win 1-0 and lift the Sunday Senior Cup – presented by York FA president Roy Ellwood and sponsored by York MotorSports Village.

Elsehwere, Thorpe had the better of the opening ten minutes of The York FA Saturday Junior Cup Final and got their reward as Jordan Emery hammered the ball into the roof of the Kirkbymoorside net.

Luke Crowther added a second on 35 minutes with a 30-yard blast into the Kirkby goal.

Kirkbymoorside started to put pressure on early in the second half, but Thorpe wrapped the game up on 58 minutes following a Emery corner and a glancing header by Martin Howson.

Thorpe’s Andy Wilson thought he had made it four but his shot was ruled offside.

The trophy, sponsored by Construction Marine Ltd, was presented by York FA’s Colin Atkinson.

There was nothing much between the sides during the opening 20 minutes of the York FA Under-19s Cup final.

However, on 28 minutes, Dringhouses' Tom Rushworth crossed from the right and Sam Drake’s glancing header found the back of the Rawcliffe net.

The second half saw Dringhouses' strength and work rate pay off as Miles Frodsham placed the ball past Rawcliffe keeper Liam Powell to put his side two up.

Frodsham then went close gain on 75 minutes, but it was Drake’s flick in from Alex Robinson’s cross that sealed the 3-0 victory with five minutes remaining.

Dringhouses lifted the Jack Butcher Trophy for the third year in succession – presented by daughter Helen Butcher, and sponsored by York MotorSports Village.

The York FA Under-12s Cup final – sponsored by Construction Marine Ltd – was played out in freezing conditions at Poppleton.

But that did not deter both Heworth and Thorpe United, who showed they were worthy finalists.

Heworth’s Eliott Heath caused the Thorpe defence problems early in the game with keeper Francis Matthew forced into making a save from a 20-yard drive.

Heath also went close when he lobed Mathew, only to see the ball go over the bar.

But it was Thorpe who broke the deadlock on 18 minutes as Sam Oldfield latched onto a through ball to drive it into the net from 15 yards.

Oldfield could have added to his tally in the closing stages of the first half, hitting the side-netting, while Heworth keeper Edgar Todd saved well at Oldfield’s feet.

Heworth came out determined in the second half and eventually got their reward on 52 minutes as Jared Garratt curled a 20-yard free-kick into the far right corner of the Thorpe net.

But his side fell behind again three minutes later as Oldfield latched onto another through ball to complete a brace, and give Thorpe a 2-1 victory and the cup which was presented by York FA president Roy Ellwood.
