TADCASTER Albion play their final game in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League today after confirming promotion to Evo-Stik League Division one north next season.

The Brewers entertain Athersley at the i2i stadium, kick-off 3pm, and are planning to sign off in style. They clinched the title at the third time of asking on Thursday night after being denied promotion at the last gasp in the previous two seasons.

The title was secured with a 2-1 home win against Armthorpe Welfare, with the three points putting them beyond the reach of nearest rivals Handsworth Parramore.

The snow came down as the players took to the field but the crowd of 845 stood firm and were in fine voice.

Armthorpe were looking to spoil Tadcaster's special night as they needed the points to secure their own Premier Division status.

The Brewers came very close to taking the lead inside the first 10 minutes.

Adam Baker, who was proving to be a useful outlet down the flanks, drove at Matthew Cunliffe before firing inside towards Jimmy Beadle, who let it run through to Josh Greening but his dinked effort was well thwarted by Leigh Overton.

Tadcaster's urgency was ramped up as chances were not taken, with keeper Overton keeping Welfare in the match.

Armthorpe's first effort on goal came in the 26th minute as Craig Aspinall's clipped ball to the back post was prodded on target by Josh Schofield but it was easy for Gary Stevens to clutch.

The Brewers finally opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Jono Greening's corner found younger brother Josh at the front post and he glanced into the far corner for his 26th goal of the season.

Tadcaster now had the platform to secure the title, although it was the visitors who come reasonably close as Ben Muirhead's well executed half-volley from 30 yards whistled narrowly over.

In the second half, Beadle – who has been an outstanding captain for the Brewers this season – came close to making it 2-0 with an acrobatic bicycle kick which ended in the side-netting.

Tadcaster doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half. Baker's blistering pace allowed him to nip in ahead of a sliding Armthorpe defender. The winger then cut back inside and he picked his spot, curling a shot into the right-hand corner to send the home fans into ecstasy.

Shortly after, Josh Greening found himself in on goal again after a powerful Beadle flick-on but his right-footed shot was well kept out by Overton.

Gregg Anderson and Andy Milne were rocks at the back for Tadcaster. Every cross or ball forward that Armthorpe put on them, they dealt with it with ease.

A third goal almost came with 15 minutes to go as Josh Greening's perfectly-weighted through-ball was met by Baker, who surged through on goal, but Overton dashed out to smother the shot.

Armthorpe never gave in and continued to push the Brewers. Substitute Luke Norbury thought he had pulled one back with a couple of minutes to go but saw his effort hooked off the line.

From the resulting corner, Welfare scored to set up a slightly nervy stoppage time. Josh Schofield found himself unmarked at the front post and the number nine headed in from a curling corner.

The full-time whistle eventually came to spark incredible and memorable scenes as fans flooded the pitch to congratulate every single player and management.
