OLD Malton St Mary’s look set to reclaim the York Minster Engineering Premier Division crown after defeating title rivals Wigginton Grasshoppers 2-0 on Wednesday evening.

Grasshoppers arrived at Malton needing only a draw to retain their position as title favourites but it was the Ryedale side who took control. Marcus Godsell headed home a corner after half an hour.

It sparked Wigginton into life and they almost equalised when a fine effort from Matthew Tiplady was denied by a great save from Ben Gill.

Despite many attacks from the visitors in the second period, the Malton defence held firm, and as Wigginton became desperate for the equaliser, Damian Cox broke free in the 89th minute and slotted home to seal a 2-0 win for St Mary’s.

Old Malton need seven points from their final three games to take the title for the third time in five years.

Current leaders Dunnington ended their season with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to resurgent Tadcaster Magnets. David Warner scored the only goal of the game.

F1 Racing had a 4-1 victory over Church Fenton White Horse. Goals from Mike Taylor, Chris Dempsey (2) and man of the match Dale Lumley saw the home side take a four-goal lead before Fenton pulled one back.

Daniel Pedras, Mark Featherstone, Jake Moyse, Matty Bastock and Robin Bedford found the target for Copmanthorpe as they defeated Osbaldwick by 5-0.

Poppleton United moved back up to fourth in Division One with a 3-2 triumph over hosts Cliffe. The visitors took a three-goal lead, and despite a late Cliffe comeback with goals from Jamie England and Shane Horner, they hung on to win.

Paul Branscombe and Jonny Moss were on target for Rawcliffe in a 4-2 defeat against York St John. Dylan Wardale, Jamie Cording, Josh Atease and Kieran Mitham netted for the students.

Tom Wood and Liam Wingfield scored for Strensall as they upset title favourites Kirkbymoorside, winning by 2-0.

Wilberfoss made sure of the Division Three title with a 1-0 win over Civil Service. Jed Vale scored the only goal as the newly-crowned champions extended their unbeaten run to 16 games.

Civil Service will now fight it out with South Milford for the remaining promotion place.

South Milford got the better of a nine-goal battle with Cawood, 5-4. Paul Moran hit a hat-trick with Robert Jackson and Chris Thompson also finding the net. Matthew Ward (3) and William Atton claimed the Cawood haul.

Jorvik Blades gave themselves hope of avoiding the drop as goals from Lewis Neave and Adam Room gave them a 2-1 win over Huby United. Rich Jennison replied. Adam Brookes and Dave McNichol scored for Rufforth United in their 2-1 win over Selby Olympia.

Heworth Green regained some momentum in the Division Four title battle as they defeated AFC Crayke 2-0. They now sit two points clear of The Raj FC, who have a game in hand. The Raj were beaten 2-1 by Malt Shovel, whose scorers were Deacon Brace and Chris Harkin. Fraser Matthews was on target for Wheldrake as they lost 2-1 at home to Settrington.
