THE York Minster Engineering League premier division title race took another twist as leaders Dunnington crashed 2-0 to Wigginton Grasshoppers at Tockwith.

In a tight game, Wiggy had the better of the opening half hour and went ahead when Jamie Willstrop outjumped the Dunnington back line and keeper, heading the ball back for Matthew Tiplady to volley home.

Six minutes later, Hoppers doubled their lead when the Dunnington keeper failed to gather the ball allowing Luke Roberts to head it over him.

The second period saw Dunnington press to get back into the game and James Barrett cleared Martin Day’s effort off the line before Wiggy themselves went close again with efforts from Chris Jackson and man-of-the-match Jordan Holt.

Wigginton now sit two points behind Dunnington with two games in hand.

The dominant side of recent years, Old Malton St Mary’s, could yet have a big say in the race as they brushed aside Church Fenton White Horse 9-0 to set up a massive showdown with Wigginton tomorrow evening.

If Saints win all of their remaining five games they will be champions.

Copmanthorpe suffered an unexpected reverse on their trip to York RI despite twice going ahead.

After Cop took an early lead through a long-range strike, Sean Stockdale burst through the middle to level.

The visitors made it 2-1 after half an hour but just before the break Adam Chaplin struck from distance to equalise, and in a nip-and-tuck second half, Craig Atkinson broke away and slid the ball home, putting RI 3-2 up.

Two yellow cards saw RI reduced to ten men and an injury forced them down to nine late on but they showed plenty of resolve to hold onto the points.

F1 Racing and Tadcaster Magnets played out an entertaining match which saw the home side lead 1-0 at half-time courtesy of a Chris Dempsey goal.

A fantastic effort from Jonah Tomlin-Kent saw F1 double their advantage before Magnets began to grow into the game, pulling a goal back in the 75th minute. The visitors then missed a penalty in the last minute.

Division one bottom club Easingwold Town pulled off a big surprise as they drew with promotion-chasing Pocklington Town.

Andrew Metcalfe Junior equalised for the hosts just before half-time after Pock had taken an early lead.

Malton & Norton moved a step closer to the title after a 2-1 triumph at Rawcliffe.

Simon Reeves bagged a brace to put the visitors 2-0 up at the interval and, despite Rawcliffe pulling a goal back, M&N were good value for the points.

They are now level on points with Sporting Knavesmire at the top, with a game in hand.
