WIGGINTON Grasshoppers and York Nomads played out one of the games of the season in the York Sunday Morning League Cup semi-finals – only decided by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Nomads started off at great pace and an early goal from James Edmond put them 1-0 ahead, a lead that was extended when Chris Dyson turned a defender inside out before rifling a shot home from 20 yards.

A nice finish from former Nomads’ player John Cavanagh made it 2-1 before Chris Bilton restored the visitors’ two goal lead immediately after the restart.

Nomads then suffered the loss of their goalkeeper to an injury. Wigginton began to fight back and a Jordan Holt header made it 3-2 before Matthew Tiplady levelled the scores with ten minutes remaining.

The drama wasn’t finished there, though, as Nomads’ substitute Danny Penrose sent them into a 4-3 lead with five minutes on the clock, only to see Josh Luckhurst level matters in the dying moments of the game when he headed home after his initial shot was saved.

Extra time was played out on a knife edge, and Penrose’s second early in the second period looked to have sent Nomads through.

However, Luckhurst had the last say in open play, hammering the ball home off the underside of the bar from 30 yards.

The shoot-out followed, and Mackenzie Nichol saved Pete Laidlaw’s spot kick – the only blot amongst the ten penalties – which allowed Wiggy to progress 5-4.

In the second semi-final, Liam Stilgoe put Dunnington 1-0 ahead at half-time against Bubwith White Swan.

Johnny Andrew doubled the home side’s lead before a brief Bubwith fight back occurred and it looked like they may force extra time.

However, the home side were far too strong and a brace off the bench from Samson Wildwood gave them a comfortable 4-2 triumph.

Dunnington will now face Grasshoppers in the League Cup final at New Earswick on Sunday, April 17 (10.30am).

In division one of the York Sunday Morning League, two of the three title contenders squared up and it was third-placed Hounds who delivered a severe blow to the title aspirations of Quakerwood.

Merciless frontmen Gary Collier and Chris Jackson showed no sympathy to an under-strength Quaker side, hitting a hat-trick and a brace respectively. Alan Jackson capped off a 6-0 win with a trademark finish.

Thorpe United and Marcia Bishopthorpe took advantage of division two leaders Brayton’s day off, closing to within one and two points of the summit and both holding games in hand.

Shaun Gandy forced an own goal to put Thorpe ahead against Knapton Lions before turning supplier to set up Jake Wild for the home side’s second.

Dan Conway hit a long range shot to put Knapton back in the game before Wild added his second to make it 3-1 at the break.

Daniel Jones gave Thorpe a 4-1 advantage before Oli Cook struck a superb free-kick to make it 4-2 at the finish.

Beeswing keeper Chris Archer made the most of wind-assisted conditions to score against Wentworth from his own area.

However, that was the best his side could do as Wentworth emerged with a commanding 8-1 success. Samir Abdoulaye (4), Dom Green (2), Joe Crabtree and Dave Moir all found the target for the former university side.

Martin Macrae scored for York Medics as they lost the first game of a double-header with Marcia Bishopthorpe 3-1. Marcia went on to take their points total for the day to six, scoring a 6-0 win in the return match.
