DAVE RICARDO wants his Selby Town side to play "as one unit rather than three" as they bid to climb the Northern Counties East League division one table.

The Robins, looking to make their games in hand count, rose two places to 11th after a remarkable helter-skelter 5-4 victory over Penistone Church on Wednesday.

Ahead of tomorrow's trip to leaders Hemsworth (3pm), Ricardo called for his defence to match the performance levels of the rest of his side.

“We need to make sure we turn up as one unit rather than three separate units," he said.

“I’m very happy with the midfield and the attack.

“It’s hard on the defence because we’ve defended really well over the last two months.

“It’s a matter of form rather than anything. We’ve got to come out and be positive all over the field and we’re not defending positively at the moment.

“We’ve got to go for the win at Hemsworth, which very few people have done this season. Draws aren’t enough for us.”

Wednesday's game was full of twists and turns.

Chris Jackson amazingly gave Town the lead after just six seconds from within his own half, and goals from Brent Leister, Will Ramsey and Luke Thompson sent Selby into the break 4-2 up.

Penistone levelled with ten minutes to go, before Selby captain Danny Norton popped up with a low drive in the last minute to win it.

Ricardo said: “From the first minute to the last it was a crackers game, but we’re so glad to have come out on the right side of it.

“We’re creating chances left, right and centre, so we’ve got to hope we can slide on that and keep it steady at the back.

“If we want to do anything in this league we’ve got to stop letting in soft goals.”

To that end, Ricardo is in the market for a centre-half. He also hopes versatile defender Chris Banks will return tomorrow.

Elsewhere in division one, Knaresborough, in ninth, go to tenth-placed Yorkshire Amateur.

In the premier division, Pickering Town boss Paul Marshall is looking to instil urgency into his side.

The Pikes sit 10th ahead of the visit of Clipstone, the fourth of seven consecutive home league games.

They dispatched Garforth Town 5-1 in the last one, their fourth win in five games in all competitions.

Said Marshall: “We’re doing okay, without getting carried away.

“We’ve got some good players, they’re very laid-back. If we can get urgency into them on a weekly basis we will be a good team.”

He added: “There’s nobody miles better than us in this league now. We don’t fear anyone, especially at home.”

Terry Taylor will be back in contention, though top scorer Ryan Cooper remains suspended.

Tadcaster Albion reached the fourth round of the League Cup in midweek with a 3-1 win at Parkgate thanks to goals by Conor Sellars, Adam Baker and Jonathan Greening.

They now have a huge game tomorrow in their search for premier division honours as they host leaders Worksop - the game to be played at Selby Town.

Taddy sit fifth, eight points adrift, but have four games in hand.

In Evo-Stik League division one north, relegation-threatened Harrogate Railway host Burscough, while Scarborough Athletic have another tough one at leaders Warrington Town.

Boro ended their losing run in midweek as Shane Killock's equaliser gave them a 1-1 draw against play-off chasers Spennymoor.
