WIGGINTON Grasshoppers surged into the third round of the York Sunday Morning League Cup after a 5-1 victory over York Medics at a rain-sodden Mill Lane.

The visitors battled hard and kept the cup holders at bay until the 35th minute when Jamie Willstrop fed skipper Tom Coates, who made no mistake from ten yards.

The second half saw Medics again defending resolutely but they were unluckily reduced to ten men early on due to injury and it took Willstrop just a couple of minutes to exploit the home side's advantage, gliding past two defenders before finishing from the edge of the box.

Josh Luckhurst then made it 3-0 before a neat one-two from the striker with Neale Holmes resulted in the latter making it 4-0 from close range.

Nabeel Ilani headed home a consolation for Medics before Jamie Green made it 5-1 for Wigginton with a low shot into the far corner.

Meanwhile, NUR moved three points clear of York Phoenix at the top of division two thanks to a 4-1 win at home to Knapton Lions.

The visitors took an early lead when Callum Watson slid in at the far post to rifle home a low cross past the helpless NUR goalkeeper.

Knapton continued to dominate the first period but were stunned when Mikey Stannard equalised against the run of play just before the half-time whistle.

The match turned on its head in the second half with James O'Donnell, Liam Waite and a second goal from Stannard sealing the points for NUR.

Brayton climbed to fifth in the table following a 7-3 success at Wentworth.

Dan Horsfall, Will Moss and Dan Mullen struck were on target for the home side.

Marcia Bishopthorpe pulled off a shock 2-0 triumph at Thorpe United.
