WIGGINTON Grasshoppers maintained their 100 per cent record in the York Sunday Morning League after a closely fought battle with York Nomads at Huntington.

The defending champions had the better of the chances in the first half with Tom Metcalfe, Jamie Willstrop, Steve Jarvis and Tom Derbyshire all coming close to breaking the deadlock, while Nomads had a penalty claim denied at the other end.

Hoppers went ahead five minutes into the second half, with Derbyshire flicking a ball for Willstrop to race onto - the midfielder making no mistake from eight yards out.

The tide then began to turn with Nomads in the ascendency.

As the home side turned the screw, they saw the Wigginton back line at full stretch and were finally rewarded when a long ball forward was met by the head of Chris Dyson, who nodded past a rooted Nichol from close range.

Further chances followed at both ends but the final twist came two minutes from time with ex-Skelton players Neale Holmes and Jamie Green combining - Green heading home the former York City player's corner to seal the points for Wiggy.

NUR advanced to the semi-finals of the Junior Challenge Trophy after overcoming York Phoenix 3-0.

Gary Stephenson's thumping header gave NUR a 1-0 half-time lead before the striker tapped in a second following the interval. Danny Cotton then rounded off the win with an outstanding strike to send his side into the last four.

Brayton also made the draw after defeating York Wanderers 3-1.

Brayton took the lead in the first half thanks to a Joe Krygsman strike. Paul Tiffany then doubled their advantage after his cross looped over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Wanderers then grabbed a lifeline after Brayton failed to deal with a long ball but, with Wanderers now pressing for the equaliser, Brayton were allowed to break on the counter attack. One such effort led to Ged Christian's delicate chip which gave the home side a 3-1 lead and was enough to see them advance in the competition.
