HOLDERS Wigginton Grasshoppers stormed into the next round of the York Sunday Morning League Cup after a 3-1 victory over Hounds.

The first goal came in the 60th minute, Tom Metcalfe dispatching a spot kick after Joe Galloway was fouled.

Five minutes later, Grasshoppers had their second after substitutes Jamie Willstrop and Tom Derbyshire combined with the latter firing home from 18 yards.

Hounds weren’t done with and Gary Collier broke away to produce a neat finish and make it 2-1. Shortly afterwards Chris Jackson missed the chance to level and, instead of an equaliser, Willstrop who placed his shot beyond the reach of the keeper to send ‘Hoppers through.

Reigning division two champions Quakerwood signalled their intent with a 9-1 mauling of Knapton Lions.

Alex Day opened the scoring for the away side with Richard Kendall making it 2-0 before half-time. In the second half, Steve Abbott came out of the Quakerwood goal to claim a hat-trick and the man of the match award.

Substitute Jamie Edgerton also bagged a hat-trick of his own before Joe Mason scored their ninth. Lions’ consolation was a sublime finish from Chris Cooper.

Chris Johnson sent Haxby into the lead in their tie but Hambleton came back in dominant fashion, recording the second 9-1 success of the round.

Dunnington also struck nine goals past Beeswing, although Nick Horne did manage a brace in reply for the visitors in the second half. Goals from Kieran Smith, Ross Wilkinson, Matthew Wain (3), Rob Hart and Simon Castle had given Dunnington a 7-0 half time advantage, with Castle and Samson Wildwood adding further goals after the interval.

Thorpe United went through after a 5-2 win at York Phoenix. James Wye fired Thorpe in front early on and doubled his tally soon after. Daniel Jones added a third before the interval.

Danny Phillips brought Phoenix back into the game but Shaun Gandy made it 4-1. Matthew Harker then set up Darren Pool for Thorpe’s fifth before Lee Jefferson restored some pride for Phoenix.

In league action, Cliffe gained three points with a 3-1 win at Brayton. Cliffe were straight out of the traps and took the lead with Andy Kirkham's bullet header from an early corner.

Adrian Wood doubled their advantage from another set piece before Nathan Parker curled a shot into the far corner.

Brayton gained a foothold in the second half and were rewarded when Kyle Wilks fired in an unstoppable shot. Despite further chances, Cliffe defended well.

Gary Stephenson fired a first half hat-trick for NUR as they eased into a 3-0 lead over York Medics. Despite Medics pulling one back, Nicky Fletcher made it 4-1.

The sides then took it in turns to score five more goals between them, with Liam Waite and James O’Donnell rounding off a 6-4 win for NUR. The Medics’ hitmen were Daniel McNaughton, Matthew Fortnam, Elliot Jones-Williams and Jack Buchanan.
