RICCALL United won a 27-penalty shoot-out to keep alive their hopes of a league and cup double in the York Minster Engineering Football League.

The premier division champions beat Dunnington 14-13 on spot-kicks after their Senior Cup semi-final ended 2-2.

Riccall will face Dringhouses in the final at Wigginton Grasshoppers’ ground on Wednesday (6.45pm) after their 4-1 win over Huntington Rovers in the last four.

James Willmoth and Paul Crangle struck for Dunnington inside 90 minutes, but Steve Lyon’s two goals for Riccall ensured that the outcome was decided on penalties.

Tom Osborne made four saves from Dunnington spot-kicks to help his side to a dramatic win, which was finally decided when youngster Oli O’Neill struck the winning penalty.

The semi-final between Dringhouses and Huntington was fairly even for the first half-hour, with neither side managing to make a breakthrough.

Dringhouses began to assert their authority in the run up to the break and were rewarded when Dave Watson cut inside and fired past Tom Hewer to give them the lead.

In the 51st minute, Gary Newton teed up Neale Holmes, whose right-footed strike brought the sides level.

Huntington were looking dangerous and both Lee Bunce and Jon James had chances to give them the lead.

Dringhouses’ pace and work-rate began to cause Huntington problems.

A majestic cross from Jordan Outerbridge was slid home by Wilson Briggs in the 80th minute to make it 2-1 and a diving header from James Robinson six minutes later put the result beyond doubt.

A penalty award in the 90th minute allowed Briggs to make it 4-1.

Dringhouses host Poppleton United tonight in the League Reserve Cup, while Huntington Rovers meet Wigginton.

Both games kick off at 6.30pm.
