BEN GIBSON helped York City reach the promised land of the Football League at Wembley Stadium. Now he is hoping to return there and hit the game’s summit with his hometown club.

The defender, such a key part of the Minstermen side that won twice under the Arch in a week back in 2012, booked a return trip to London after Middlesbrough beat Brentford 3-0 in the second-leg of the Championship play-off semi-final tonight to record a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Lee Tomlin’s goal, a sublime curling shot from just outside the D midway through the first half, settled the nerves in a packed Riverside Stadium before Kike, 12 minutes after the restart, sealed the tie.

Again Tomlin was at the heart of matters. His through ball released Jelle Vossen and, despite a slip, he found Kike eight yards out in a central position.

The Spanish forward could have shot first time but composed himself, took a step to the right, and hammered his effort into the top of the net.

And, with the 13 minutes remaining, a fabulous move saw Albert Adomah finish in style after wandering across the six-yard area.

The Bees’ Andre Grey, who scored the first goal when City beat Luton 2-1 under the Arch in the Conference play-off final three years ago, was the chief threat to the Teessiders but, aside from a couple of crosses flashed across the box, was marshalled well by Gibson and company.

England Under-21 international Gibson, also part of the Gary Mills' team that beat Newport 2-0 in the FA Trophy final, will now have the chance to help Middlesbrough return to the Premier League after a six year absence.

Boro will play the winners of tomorrow lunchtime’s finely poised second-leg between Ipswich and Norwich. The final is held on May 25.
