HUNTINGTON Rovers pulled off a surprise penalty shoot-out win to knock Old Malton St Mary’s out of the York Minster Engineering Football League Senior Cup.

Huntington hosted St Mary’s without a host of first-team players and the Ryedale side took the lead through an early penalty.

Rovers worked tirelessly to get back into the game and Joe Milner was fouled inside the area to give the hosts a penalty.

Lee Bunce’s spot kick was well saved by Old Malton keeper Ben Gill, but Huntington player-manager Iain Dunn was first to react and squared the rebound back to Bunce, who made no mistake second time around.

The second half saw Old Malton regain the lead, capitalising on a Rovers defensive error.

In the 87th minute, 17-year-old Milner scored a wonder goal to send the game to penalties, turning on a sixpence at the edge of the box and hitting an unstoppable shot into the far corner.

Despite a second penalty miss of the night by Bunce, Rovers scored their other four penalties to gain a 4-3 shootout win.

Rovers were last night facing Dringhouses in the semi-finals after a youthful Houses side overcame ten-man Copmanthorpe 3-0.

A rare error from Copmanthorpe goalkeeper Ben Sheehan gifted Dringhouses’ Dave Watson a tap-in after 20 minutes.

Two minutes later, Wilson Briggs broke free to slot the ball past the advancing Sheehan from the edge of the box.

Dringhouses went close to a third goal when a Sam Ripley-Kitson header was cleared off the line, but it remained 2-0 at the break.

The introduction of Robin Bedford saw Copmanthorpe gain new energy in the second half and the striker was close to scoring on a number of occasions.

However, when Sheehan brought down Briggs in the box in the 80th minute, the keeper was shown a red card and Briggs converted the penalty.

Riccall United were hosting Dunnington in the other last four tie last night.

In the League Junior Cup semi-finals, South Milford gained a 3-2 success over Barmby Moor, while Stamford Bridge were defeated 6-5 on penalties by Thorpe United following a 3-3 draw in 90 minutes.

The final will be played at Tadcaster Magnets on Tuesday at 6.30pm.
