DUNNINGTON turned the tables on Wigginton Grasshoppers to lift the York Sunday Morning Football League Challenge Trophy.

The Common Lane side avenged the previous week’s York FA Sunday Morning Cup final defeat at the hands of Grasshoppers with a 2-1 triumph at New Earswick.

The first half saw few real chances at either end, though Wiggy’s Matt Tiplady and Dunnington’s Jonny Andrew missed opportunities to put their respective sides in front.

Tiplady broke the deadlock ten minutes before the break, pouncing on a Dunnington defensive error to slot the ball between the covering defenders. Tom Coates went close to doubling Wiggy’s lead after the break, but Robert Chipps latched onto the clearance to level.

Dunnington dominated the next 20 minutes, with Tom Nicholson having to clear off the line to prevent Wigginton falling behind.

With a minute remaining, a Wigginton attack broke down and Andrews hit a hopeful clearance that found Chipps clear of the Wiggy back line, only to be brought down by the keeper.

The felled attacker then stepped up to calmly put away the resulting penalty, ending Wigginton’s hopes of a fourth trophy.

In the York Minster Engineering League Senior Cup, premier division Huntington Rovers ousted division one side Pocklington Town 4-2.

The scorers were Iain Dunn, Neale Holmes, Joe Milner and Gary Newton, with Huw Jones and Liam Serginson netting for Pock.

A Gary Collier hat-trick gave newly-crowned champions Riccall United a 3-2 win over Hemingbrough.

Top flight trio Old Malton St Mary’s, Dringhouses and Dunnington all progressed with wins over fellow premier division outfits Church Fenton White Horse, Tadcaster Magnets and Osbaldwick respectively.

In the Junior Cup, a brace from Nathan Spreckley and a John Cavanagh effort were enough to see Stamford Bridge edge past Rawcliffe 3-2.

David Reasbeck and Thomas Murden struck for Thorpe United in their 2-1 triumph at Bishopthorpe.

Shaun Elvidge and Jack Lockwood found the net for Barmby Moor in a 2-1 win over Strensall.

Robin Goforth struck the only goal of the game as Brooklyn claimed another top flight scalp in the Reserve Cup, ousting Dringhouses.

A thriller at Church Fenton White Horse saw Wigginton Grasshoppers forge into a 3-0 lead through Matt Tiplady, Rob Orr and Steve Jarvis, before goals from Danny Graham, Tristan Gretton and Chris Thompson sent the tie to penalties. Tiplady stepped up to fire the deciding spot kick to put Hoppers into the next round.
