WIGGINTON Grasshoppers trounced Marcia Grey 6-0 to add a first York Sunday Morning League Cup triumph to their division one championship success.

Wigginton got off to a shaky start as the newly-promoted Acomb side dominated the first ten minutes of the final at New Earswick Sports Club.

However, Marcia were made to pay for not converting their possession into goals when, in the 11th minute, when Jamie Willstrop escaped his marker and slotted his shot into the far corner.

Chances followed at both ends but the score remained 1-0 until the 22nd minute when Dan Zambelli’s diagonal ball found Jamie Green at the back post, the winger nodding home from close range.

Marcia Grey were still not out of it at 2-0 and Tommy Medd’s rasping drive forced Wigginton keeper Michael Clancy into a stunning save to allow his team to preserve their clean sheet.

A Wigginton corner five minutes before half-time then allowed Hoppers to extend their lead to three, Josh Luckhurst converting Willstrop’s delivery.

Alex Day then produced some neat footwork to create another chance for Marcia, but once again the Wiggy back line held firm.

The second half saw Grasshoppers complete a polished performance.

When the Marcia keeper’s clearance went astray, Steve Jarvis picked up on the loose ball and produced a powerful drive that cannoned in off an upright and the bar leaving the stopper with no chance of making a save.

After 64 minutes, Zambelli once again produced a sublime pass that left Green free to clear away from the Marcia Grey defence and produce a clinical finish to give Wiggy a five-goal lead.

The final word came from Willstrop as he once again found the bottom corner from Green’s pull-back to put the icing on the cake for Wigginton.

In division one league action, Station earned derby bragging rights with a 3-2 victory over Hounds.

Wayne Brooke and Mike Braithwaite gave Station a two-goal cushion by half-time before Gary Collier added the decisive third.

Alan Jackson and Ben Yorke notched for Hounds.

Cliffe won another Selby derby in division three, seeing off Selby Olympia 4-3.

Olympia’s target men were Chris Thompson, Andrew Parker and Dave Whisker, while goals from Richardson, Parker, Dinsdale and match-winner Nathan Leach won it for the away side.
