DUNNINGTON edged past Marcia Grey to reach the final of the York Sunday Morning Final League Challenge Trophy.

A tight first half saw Marcia Grey take the lead when Alex Day latched onto a long ball and rounded the keeper before tapping into an empty net.

It took Dunnington until midway through the second half to respond, with Samson Wildwood hitting a spectacular volley from inside the area.

Shortly afterwards Day scored his second goal, volleying into an undefended net after the goalkeeper’s punch fell to him just outside the 18-yard box.

The last 20 minutes saw Dunnington pressing for an equaliser, with Leon Finney in the Marcia goal called into action on several occasions.

Finally, with time running out, a Jonny Andrews free-kick dropped to Matty Wain, who volleyed home from close range.

The game moved into extra-time and Dunnington broke the deadlock when skipper Josh Tattersall was left unmarked at the back post and converted another Andrews’ free-kick.

Marcia rallied in the final 15, but Dunnington held on for a 3-2 victory.

The other semi-final pitted newly-crowned division one champions Wigginton Grasshoppers against division two Britannia Tadcaster.

It seemed like plain sailing for the home side when Jamie Green put them ahead early on, and Dan Zambelli doubled their advantage with a neat finish after half an hour.

Just before the break, however, Grasshoppers were caught napping and a long ball beat their back four leaving Adam Field to slot the ball past an advancing Michael Clancy.

The start of the second period saw Britannia really find their stride and they equalised in the 60th minute and, a minute later, Field embarked on a run at goal and put Britannia into a 3-2 lead.

Wiggy were then denied by save after save from the outstanding Jordan Tinker in the Britannia goal.

With Tadcaster reduced to ten men for a professional foul, the scores were finally levelled when Matthew Tiplady fired home with five minutes remaining.

Extra time proved a step too far for Tadcaster as Eddy Clapham smashed home Wiggy’s fourth half-way through the first period.

Another red card followed to reduce Britannia to nine players and, at the start of the second period, keeper Tinker was dismissed after bringing down Green in the penalty area.

Wigginton stopper Clancy put the spot kick away to make it 5-3 before Tiplady rounded off the scoring to send Wigginton into the final against Dunnington at New Earswick.

In division one, Hounds and Station drew 2-2, with Richard Gladwell and Gary Chapman found the target for hosts Hounds and Ryan Whitlam and Derry Dobson replying for Station.

NUR moved to within a point of second-placed Marcia Grey with a 3-0 win over Brayton in division two.

Aiden Ward and James O’Donnell put the visitors in command at half-time before Ward added his second late in the game.

Matthew Whittaker (2), Mark Baggaley (2) and Brad Hall were on target for Snaith as they defeated Hambleton 5-3.

Haxby United pulled off something of a surprise in division three, beating second-placed Thorpe United 2-0 with goals from Mark Scoreby and Will Plews.

Shane Cawkhill scored the only goal of the game as Selby Olympia tasted success at Wentworth.

Matt Fortnam and Elliot Jones-Williams scored for York Medics as they lost 3-2 at Marcia Bishopthorpe.
