A PENALTY from striker Calum Ward kept Tadcaster Albion’s FA Vase hopes alive as they drew 1-1 after extra time at Highworth Town in the quarter-finals.

The Brewers brought their Wiltshire opponents back to Ings Lane for a replay this Saturday (3pm) after hitting back from a goal down at the Elms.

Highworth captain TJ Bohane put the home side in front with a penalty on the hour, but Ward struck from the spot seven minutes later after a handball in the area.

The winners of Saturday's replay will take on North Shields in a two-legged semi-final, with the home tie on Saturday, March 21 and the away leg a week later.

“It was a great result for us in the end,” said Albion boss Paul Marshall. “It was a proper cup tie with two teams giving their all.

"For their penalty, our keeper didn’t think he brought their lad down. He felt he backed into him, but then we got one at the other end.”

Ward and Carl Stewart had chances for Albion in a cagey first half, but the home side also had their moments, with Tom Morgan keeping out a Bohane effort on the line before Ryan King’s follow up was ruled out for offside.

Highworth forged ahead when Callum Parsons was felled in the area and Bohane placed his penalty in the bottom right-hand corner of the net Josh Greening’s burst was halted by a home defender, but shortly afterwards the Brewers were level after Ward’s penalty.

Both sides had chances to settle the tie before extra time, but the Brewers were denied after a scramble in the area and Dan Drewett’s shot went narrowly wide.

Ward went close in extra time and, after a couple of Highworth chances, Albion’s Andy Milne headed onto the bar in the closing minutes.

North Shields and St Austell booked their places in the semi-final draw.

North Shields were 2-0 winners at Erith & Belvedere, while St Austell beat Ascot United 3-2, hitting back from 2-1 down to progress.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce’s tie against Glossop North End was delayed 24 hours and the sides drew 2-2 after extra time yesterday.

St Austell will face the winner of Shaw Lane and Glossop in the second semi-final.
