TADCASTER Albion will look to be FA Vase history-makers tomorrow.

The Brewers have never reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious cup competition but a place in the last eight awaits if they can find a way past Northern Counties East League rivals AFC Mansfield.

Albion haven’t been involved in a fifth-round Vase encounter since exiting to Frecheville in 1978 and they are likely to have their hands full with Rudy Funk’s resurgent Nottinghamshire outfit.

Mansfield may be a division below Taddy but, since Funk’s arrival following his departure from Scarborough Athletic, they have invested significantly in their squad - bringing in a number of former Evo-Stik League players as they look to surge up the ladder.

Tadcaster manager Paul Marshall has watched Mansfield twice and is more than aware of the threat they pose. But he believes if his table-topping men continue the form they have shown this season so far, they can leave victorious.

“It is our biggest game since 1978 when Tadcaster last got to this round,” he said. “That was a long time ago. We are a progressive club and this is just the start of things.

“We are trying to make history by making the last eight.

“It’s a very tough game. Mansfield have brought in another two players this week. They have improved again.

“Obviously, we have got momentum. We have been together for quite a while and we have strengthened slowly.

“They are a club on the up. They are going to be better in the future so we might be getting them just at the right time.”

Marshall will be without striker Carl Stewart, who starts a three- game ban after being sent off in the last round against Brocton, while Tom Claisse is serving the third game of his suspension.

Star striker Josh Greening is fit having struggled with an ankle injury, while Denny Ingram is also fine to return at centre-half. Marshall said he was delighted to have some selection headaches.

“I’m going to have a problem picking the team and everyone wants to play. We are going to have to play to the best of our capability.

“From what I have seen over the two games (I’ve watched them), if we play like we can we can beat them. If we dip, they will have a strong chance to beat us. But I am very confident.”

He added: “I feel very strongly that we are going to achieve something special with this group of players.

"They have just blended so well together. When managers talk about it taking time for players to settle into a new squad, our lads have settled in so quickly."
