The home side scored from the first scrum, but RI hit back and slick handling saw winger Jack Whittaker touch down in the corner.

A penalty from man of the match Chris Morley gave RI a brief lead, but the hosts hit back to hold a 14-8 advantage at the break.

RI had pace out wide and threatened the Knottingley line every time Lewis Long and Will Pycroft had the ball. However, the wet, muddy conditions starved them of quality possession and the match became a forward battle.

The RI pack, led by Ben Baird and Matt Corr, powered forward, but Knottingley’s defence held firm and a late interception try and a couple of missed tackles saw the hosts home.

Anyone looking for a game of social rugby is welcome to attend training at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at RI’s New Lane ground.
