MARKSMAN supreme Josh Greening has helped Tadcaster Albion score a massive coup.

Besides his 16th goal of the season setting the Northern Counties East League premier division leaders to a hard-fought 2-1 derby triumph over his former club Pickering Town, Greening signed a new contract, which will keep him at the Brewers for at least another year.

The news thrilled manager Paul Marshall and the Albion management team as much as the 2-1 triumph in front of a 500-plus crowd at Ings Lane.

Revealing that several clubs were gazing covetously in Greeening’s direction, including Evo-Stik League premier division outfit Whitby Town, Marshall added: “It’s a huge development for us and a commitment by Josh and us of what we are trying to achieve.

“There are several clubs that have been sniffing around him since he has come here and played so well, so to get him on a longer deal is a massive coup.”

Greening opened the scoring in the early exchanges against Pikes from whom he joined Albion in the summer.

But as Marshall explained, the hosts did not have everything their own way and indeed depended heavily on an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Tom Morgan to hang on to the three points.

“Mitch Cook’s men played ever so well,” conceded the Brewers’ boss.

“They all played well above themselves, while we had five or six below-par.

“However, that’s a sign of a good team that you can win when you’ve not played well.

“We also had a debt to pay Tom Morgan in goal.

“After we went 2-1 up he made this absolutely stunning reflex save to keep out an effort from just six yards in the last few minutes.”

Pikes wiped out Greening’s opener just after the hour when Joe Danby was on target.

But a tactical switch in which Marshall brought on Tom Chamberlain and Vincent Dhesi to pep up the home attack, it was Chamberlain - another former Pickering lad who was once on York City’s books - who nabbed the winner nine minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Selby Town drew 1-1 at Worsborough in the NCEL first division.

In division one north of the Evo-Stik League, Scarborough Athletic beat visitors Ossett Town 2-0, but Harrogate Railway perished 4-3 at Kendal.
