MARTY GARGETT’S 90th-minute volley earned ten-man Pocklington Town under-19s a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Selby Town in their Northern Alliance curtain raiser.

Pocklington went a man down when 16-year-old Huw Jones was forced out of the action due to a nasty clash of heads after the visitors had already made their three substitutions.

The hosts had just taken an 80th-minute lead through Declan Coulthard but Kevin Graham’s team deserved a share of the spoils over the course of the match.

Earlier, Sean Minto had pulled off a couple of outstanding first-half saves to keep Selby at bay, but Jones also went close with a deflected shot.

After the break, Elliott Precious provided a constant threat down the left-hand side for the Flaxley Road teenagers but two disallowed goals - the first against Joe Milner for offside and the second following Gargett’s header from a well-worked short corner - prevented Pock from breaking the deadlock.

A defensive mix-up, though, handed Selby the lead with Coulthard hooking a bouncing ball over Minto from the edge of the box.

Pocklington levelled, though, after Milner retrieved the ball following an excellent save by Theo Cieply and, after a defensive clearance fell to the excellent Gargett, he rifled the ball in through a crowded penalty box.

Next up for Pock U19s is a home match with Eccleshill United tonight, kick-off 7.45pm.
